ST. PAUL, Minn. – In their first game of the 2020 fall season, The Concordia Golden Bears Rocket League team fell 3-0 in both of Tuesday night's three-game series with Wisconsin-Stout and Milwaukee School of Engineering in the group stage of the NACE Fall Rocket League Championship.
The Golden Bears are looking to build off of a season in which they went 1-7 in the fall in their first ever season in program history. CSP took a step forward by going 2-3 in a shortened spring season due to COVID-19.
CSP rolled out their starting lineup against the Blue Devils as the freshman
Brett Mickelson got his first collegiate, sophomore
David Voelker and sophomore
Dominic Cummings.
In the first game of the night, the Blue Devils came out firing as they outshot the Golden Bears 11-0 but the Golden Bears defense held strong as
Brett Mickelson posted five saves,
David Voelker made one and
Dominic Cummings made two saves. The Blue Devils put up one goal and the Golden Bears were unable to answer back, and Wisconsin-Stout took game one.
The Blue Devils put up a barrage of shots in game two as they outshot the Golden Bears 19-2 and scored seven goals while holding the Golden Bears to only two shots and no goals. Once again
Brett Mickelson led the team with four saves followed by Cummings with two saves and Voelker with one save.
In the third and final game of the match, CSP was able to put more pressure on the Blue Devils with five shots, but Wisconsin-Stout was still able to sneak in five goals on 16 shots. Mickelson led the team with four saves and also posted two shots, Voelker also posted two shots and had two saves and Cummings put up one shot and made one save.
The second match of the night against the Raiders the Golden Bears were able to establish their offense as it was a back and forth game as Mickelson scored his first collegiate goal and also posted two saves and three shots.
Dominic Cummings also scored a goal in this game with three shots and one save, and
David Voelker had an assist and posted two shots. After tying the game within the last minutes of the match, the Raiders scored in the final seconds to capture the first match of the game with a 3-2 victory.
It was another defensive battle in game two as both teams had their options to score but the Raiders would come away with the 1-0 victory over the Golden Bears. The Raiders outshot the Golden Bears 8-2.
Dominic Cummings led the team with three saves.
The third and final match of the night went to the Raiders, but CSP was able to put in some goals to make things interesting. The freshman
Brett Mickelson shined in this game with two goals and led the team with five shots, but it wasn't enough as Milwaukee School of Engineering won the match 5-2 and won the game.
CSP will look to get into the win column next Tuesday as they will take on Kettering (Mich.) at 7 Pm and Northwood (Mich.) at 8:15 PM.
