Golden Bears split in day four of The Spring Games in Florida

CSP defeated Saint Rose 8-4, but fell to Seton Hill 5-0 in game two

JAN PHYL VILLAGE, Fla. – The Golden Bear softball team (9-8) split on their fourth day of the Spring Games in Florida. In the first game the Golden Bears bats came out to play as they put a four spot on the board in the first inning to help Samantha Sullivan pitch a complete game over Saint Rose. In game two CSP ran into a hot pitcher and couldn't muster up the same offensive power they had in the first game. Despite a great effort from pitcher Kali Kaestner, the Golden Bears fell to Seton Hill 5-0.

GAME 1: CSP 8, SAINT ROSE 4
Concordia got off to a fast start in the first game as Kris McIntyre singled to center field followed by a Hannah Mihalik single and then a double steal from both McIntyre and Mihalik and a Hannah Carlson walk set up freshman Grace Beseman who doubled, scoring McIntyre and Mihalik. Aryka Knoche reached on an error by the Golden Knights shortstop and both Carlson and Beseman scored to give the Golden Bears a 4-0 lead.

CSP would tack on two more runs in the top of the second inning when Meagan Bliese singled and then stole second base, freshman Clara Heislen followed that with a two-run homerun to center fielder to give the Golden Bears a 6-0 lead. That was Heislen's second home run of the season.

The Golden Knights would get one back in the bottom of the second inning when Savanna Liverio homered down the left field line to make it a 6-1 game. Samantha Sullivan would bounce back to retire the side after a one out single. Concordia would put across another run in the top of the fourth inning when Clara Heislen put down a bunt single and then advanced to second when Kris McIntyre reached first on an error by the Golden Knights shortstop. Hannah Mihalik would put down a sac bunt advancing the runners and then Hannah Carlson hit a sacrifice fly to left field which scored Heislen to make it 7-1 CSP.

CSP would add one more run in the top of the sixth inning when Kris McIntyre singled through the right side and stole second base. Hannah Mihalik grounded out to third base and McIntyre advanced to third on the throw over to first. Hannah Carlson then singled through the left side to score McIntyre and give the Golden Bears an 8-1 lead.

The Golden Knights made it interesting in the bottom of the seventh when they scored three runs to make it 8-4, but Samantha Sullivan held them there and earned her second win of the season going seven innings, allowing nine hits on four runs, two earned runs, two walks and two strikeouts.

Clara Heislen went 2-4 with two RBIs a homerun and two runs scored, Kris McIntyre went 3-4 with two runs scored and three stolen bases, Hannah Mihalik went 1-3 with a run scored and one stolen base, Hannah Carlson went 1-2 with two RBIs, Grace Beseman went 3-4 with a double and two RBIs and Meagan Bliese went 1-3 with a stolen base.

GAME 2: CSP 0, SETON HILL 5
This game was scoreless for the first four innings as each pitcher was making quick work of each other's lineups. The Griffins would strike first, and they would strike hard in the fifth inning. After back to back singles, Chelsea Rohan blasted a three-run homerun to right center to give the Griffins a 3-0 lead over the Golden Bears.

The Griffins would add two more runs in the top of the seventh inning and that would be all that Shaelynn Myers needed as she threw a complete game shutout for the Griffins, allowing only three hits, four walks and struck out six Golden Bears. Kali Kaestner also threw seven innings, allowing eight hits and four earned runs while striking out six. She suffered only her second loss of the season.

Meagan Bliese went 1-3, Hannah Carlson was 1-3 and Amanda Parsons went 1-2 in this game for the Golden Bears.

Concordia will play its final two games in Florida tomorrow; they take on Ohio Dominican at 1:30 p.m. and Mercyhurst at 3:45 p.m. Both games will have live stats available which can be found on the team's schedule page.
