Golden Bears sweep during their final day in Florida

CSP earn two wins as they go 7-3 in the Spring Games

JAN PHYL VILLAGE, Fla. – The Golden Bear softball team (11-8) won both games in their last day of the Spring Games in Florida. The Golden Bears won a close game against Ohio Dominican as the game had to be decided in extra innings. The Golden Bears were up 2-0 in the bottom of the seventh, but the Panthers hit a two out two run home run to tie the game at two. CSP would score three runs in the top of the eight and ended up winning the game 5-3.

In game two the Golden Bears offense came out in a big way, scoring one run in the bottom of the first inning, ten in the second inning and one in the bottom of the third inning off of Mercyhurst. Bryanna Olson pitched five innings with eight strikeouts and allowing two runs on three hits. Concordia won the game 12-2 in five innings.

GAME ONE: CSP 5, OHIO DOMINICAN 3

The Golden Bears struck first in the fifth inning, Grace Beseman singled up the middle to lead the inning off and then Hanna Mortenson put down a sac bunt to advance Beseman to second base. Then Emma Lero singled up the middle to score Beseman from second and to give CSP a 1-0 lead. That RBI was Emma Lero's first career RBI as a Golden Bear.

In the top of the sixth inning the Golden Bears put another run on when Kris McIntyre had a leadoff walk but was thrown out trying to steal second base. Then a Hannah Mihalik ground to third looked like the Panthers would have a smooth inning but then Hannah Carlson hit a homerun to right field on the first pitch she saw to give CSP a 2-0 lead. That was Carlson's third home run of the season.

In the bottom of the seventh it looked like Aryka Knoche was going to pitch a shutout when she got two quick outs, but a Golden Bear error set the stage for Taylor Farmer who took a 3-1 pitch deep over the centerfield fence to tie the game at 2-2. Kali Kaestner would relive Knoche who went 6.2 innings striking out four and allowing only one run on nine hits.

In extra innings each team started with a runner on second base, Clara Heislen was placed at second for the Golden Bears in the top of the eighth inning. Kris McIntyre singled which moved Heislen to third base, then Hannah Mihalik singled to short which scored Heislen and McIntyre moved to second to give CSP a 3-2 lead. Concordia was not down there though, Hannah Carlson doubled to left field scoring McIntyre and CSP led 4-2. After Amanda Parsons reached on a fielder's choice, Grace Beseman grounded out to shortstop scoring Hannah Carlson to give the Golden Bears a 5-2 lead.

The Panthers would get one back in the bottom of the eighth but Kali Kaestner held them as she went 1.1 innings allowing only one hit and struck out two to earn her fourth win of the season.
