MELBOURNE, Fla. - The #16 Concordia-St. Paul (4-1) women's lacrosse team saw its perfect start to 2020 come to a close, falling 14-12 to #6 Regis University (2-0) on Sunday at Panther Stadium on the campus of Florida Tech University.
Concordia continues its stretch against nationally-ranked competition at Tampa on Tuesday at 6 p.m. (CT). The Spartans are #3 in the Nike / US Lacrosse Top-20 and #7 in the IWLCA Coaches Poll.
The Golden Bears trailed by four, 14-10, with 5:36 to play but due to a dominant effort on the draw control kept a realistic comeback within reach against the 2019 NCAA Division II national semifinalist Rangers.
And just 19 seconds later, following another draw control pickup, Concordia scored as senior
Alina Boyce netted her fourth goal of the game. Less than two minutes later, it was sophomore
Mary Keating scoring on the free position shot for her second goal of the contest, bringing Concordia within two goals, 14-12 with 3:33 to go.
The key to the draw control was junior
Sarah Pierson, who put up her second game with nine draw controls, just one shy of the program's single-game record. Overall, Concordia used a commanding 23-5 edge on the draw with junior
Lexi Stanley and redshirt freshman
Molly Moynihan each adding five. Moynihan also had three points on the day, with two goals and assist in the first half which tied hte game at 6-6 with 10:58 in the first half. Keating also had three draw controls for the Golden Bears.
But the Rangers made up for the draw control disparity by controlling play on the field, causing 23 of CSP's 28 turnovers while committing just 14 turnovers, helping lead to a 33-16 margin in ground balls for Regis.
The combination of CSP's dominance on the draw and Regis' dominance in the field led to a nearly even shot margin, with the Rangers firing 26 shots to CSP's 24 with each team putting 21 on goal.
In the end, it was Regis All-America goalie Elle Crawford who came up with two more saves, finishing with nine while allowing 12 goals while CSP's goalie tandem of senior
Katie Lottsfeldt and junior
Claire Hagen combined for seven saves. Hagen was particularly sharp down the stretch, stopping three of the first four shots on goal while playing the final 20 minutes.
Regis was led by Lucy Johnson's four goals while Kyleigh Peoples and Ali Vanek each had three goals and an assist. Jessica Berg had eight ground balls and six caused turnovers and Sarah Kate Dhom had six ground balls and five caused turnovers.
