ST. PAUL, Minn. - Concordia-St. Paul (2-0) thwarted a second half rally by Rockhurst (0-2), scoring the final six goals in a 14-6 victory on Saturday afternoon at the Concordia Dome at Sea Foam Stadium.
Concordia had opened up an 8-3 lead before Rockhurst netted a goal late in the first half and scored the first two goals in the opening 12 minutes during a quiet start to the second half.
Down the stretch, juniors
Sarah Pierson and
Margot Coomes took control of the game, combining for five goals in a stretch of 13:12 of play starting with Coomes scoring in traffic at 14:54 to pull ahead to 9-6. Pierson then scored three in a row as part of a five goal outburst by the transfer from St. Leo. After a goal by sophomore
Mary Keating with 2:05 to go, Coomes added another with 1:40 to extend the lead to eight goals late.
Rockhurst remains in St. Paul with an 11:15 a.m. start against UC-Colorado Springs on Sunday at the Concordia Dome, while CSP returns home next Friday with a 1 p.m. draw against #14 Colorado Mesa, also hosting Lewis next Sunday, February 23 at noon.
Concordia is now 3-0 all-time against Rockhurst, who was making its first trip to St. Paul with the other two meetings occurring in Kansas City in 2017 and 2019.
Pierson's performance wasn't just on the offensive end, adding three draw controls, two ground balls and a caused turnover while leading the attack with 10 shots (seven on goal). Coomes was one of three Golden Bears to produce two goals, joined by senior
Alina Boyce and junior
Katie Moynihan, with Boyce also adding an assist for a three-point game. Keating matched Boyce with three points, coming off a goal and two assists.
Overall, Concordia had another balanced offensive effort as seven total players had two-plus points, with junior
Lex Seifert chipping in a goal and an assist and freshman
Taya Schubert contributing a pair of assists. Seven of Concordia's 14 goals in the game were assisted.
In the net, senior
Katie Lottsfeldt continued her strong start by saving 13 of the 19 shots on goal against her, adding three caused turnovers and her activity leading to nine ground balls.
Although Concordia held the 8-3 lead late into the first half, it was Rockhurst who scored first with Helen Krause scoring at 28:15 on a feed from Danielle Mabry. CSP scored the next two before Krause scored again to knot the game at two just over 10 minutes into play.
Forced into an early timeout, Concordia responded with three straight goals starting with seniors Boyce and
Maddie Hentges - the program's top career scorers - with Pierson netting her second to close out the spurt. After Krause scored her third of the game to halt the 3-0 streak,
Katie Moynihan scored back-to-back goals followed by Seifert's goal with 1:07 to play in the half for a second 3-0 run as part of a 6-1 stretch of play spanning nearly 18 minutes of action.
Ball control was a key factor for Concordia, executing 20-of-23 clears while limiting Rockhurst to 15-of-23 and utilizing a 13-9 edge on the draw and 32-26 on ground balls (16 each half) to keep possession tilted in its favor. Seven players had at least two ground balls for Concordia with Seifert and
Katie Moynihan each adding four to go with Lottsfeldt's nine.
Lexi Stanley matched Pierson's three draw controls while adding three ground balls and two caused turnovers.
Helen Krause's three goals led the Rockhurst attack while Audrey Ford assisted twice on the day. Logan Derosia had a game-high four draw controls while Mackenzie Blair had three caused turnovers and three ground balls. Emily Duff took the loss in net, allowing the first eight goals while making seven first half saves before giving way to Madeline Morrison who allowed six goals and had four saves in the second half.
The result was another positive shot margin, this time a 34-23 edge for the game.
