ST. PAUL, Minn. – On the opening day of the Tespa Collegiate Championship West Division Second Split playoffs, Concordia-St. Paul picked up two wins before dropping their third round matchup. CSP will return to action in the loser's bracket tomorrow at noon.
FIRST ROUND: Concordia-St. Paul 3, Las Positas (Calif.) 1
It was a battle of demon hunters in the first game and the Golden Bears surged to an early lead with some big attacks. It took just seven turns to come out on top as they were dealt just two damage in the win.
CSP turned to their rogue deck against LPC's paladin in game two. It was more of the same in game two as Concordia cruised to victory in seven turns for the second time in a row.
Concordia was not able to complete the sweep, however, as Las Positas' rogue deck managed to hold of CSP's paladin deck. It proved to be the longest contest of the match as the war of attrition was eventually won with the playing of Yogg Saron for LPC.
The Golden Bears wrapped things up in the fourth as they won the battle of paladins. CSP found themselves in a fairly deep hole with 17 health compared to the full 30 for LPC on turn 10, but a big turn quickly shifted the momentum in their favor. The match lasted just one more turn as a 16 damage turn finished it off.
SECOND ROUND: Concordia-St. Paul 3, Washington (Mo.) 0
In the second match of the day, Concordia opened with their warlock deck while the Bears used their demon hunter. The Golden Bears found themselves on the brink of defeat as they sat at just three health with WU at 24 through seven turns, but a Lord Jaraxxus play stemmed the tide and put CSP in the driver's seat. Washington, finding themselves in a tough spot, conceded just a few turns later to give CSP a 1-0 lead.
The Golden Bears turned to their rogue deck in the second game while WU called on their shaman deck. Concordia set the tone early and held a slim lead for much of the early portion of the game before finishing it off on turn eight.
CSP finished things off in game three as their paladin deck took care of the shaman deck for the Bears. Concordia once again slowly built a lead before finishing the job on their 10
th turn to complete the sweep.
THIRD ROUND: Texas 3, Concordia-St. Paul 1
Concordia kicked things off in the third match with their warlock deck against the Longhorns' hunter deck. It was fairly even over the first few turns, but Texas built a decisive edge on turn six before closing it out one turn later.
CSP followed with their rogue deck matched up with UT's shaman deck. A timely Edwin VanCleef play for the Golden Bears proved to be the difference as they forced a concession on turn eight as they evened the match at 1-1.
The Golden Bears went back to the warlock deck in game three while Texas responded with their shaman deck. A big board for the Longhorns set up a huge turn seven as they picked up the win and regained their lead in the match.
The Longhorns closed things out in game four as they used their demon hunter against CSP's paladin deck. Texas put together a fast start to knock Concordia all the way down to 13 health on the third turn before finishing off the win four turns later.
