Golden Bears drop a pair on Friday night

SSBU falls to MSOE and CUW

10.30.20

ST. PAUL, Minn. – The Concordia-St. Paul Super Smash Bros. Ultimate team (0-5) was swept in a pair of matches on Friday night as they fell to Milwaukee School of Engineering and Concordia-Wisconsin.

In the first game of the day, MSOE's top player made life difficult for the Golden Bears as he took all three stocks from Joseph Gonzalez and the first from Josiah Skorseth. Skorseth then responded with the first kill of the day for the team before the lead player for the Raiders took the next two stocks to knock him out. Andrew Stroming was next up and after dropping his first stock, he took one from MSOE's first player, but that would be all the more he could muster before falling. Rounding it out for CSP in the opening game was Benjamin Gillespie as he looked to pull off a dramatic comeback. That comeback would not come to fruition, however, as the Raiders took all three stocks in order to pick up the win.

In game two, CSP turned to Benjamin Gillespie first and he managed to take two stocks from MSOE's first player before being eliminated. Stroming was next up, and CSP's second player made quick work of the last stock for MSOE's first as he knocked him out before losing any of his own. Against the next player, it was a back and forth battle before Stroming delivered the final blow to give CSP a slim advantage heading to the Raiders' third player. He kept the Golden Bears in front as he managed to grab one more stock before falling.

Skorseth looked set to maintain the slight lead as he traded the first few stocks, but a decisive blow for MSOE's third player with one stock left brought in Gonzalez for CSP. Gonzalez dropped his first two stocks, but did manage to push MSOE to their final player as it came down to the wire. He was unable to hang on, however, as the Raiders snuck away with the sweep.

Against the Falcons in the nightcap, Josiah Skorseth was tapped as the first player. Skorseth dropped the first two stocks before grabbing his first kill, but he was unable to take any more before being knocked out. Joseph Gonzalez followed and took an early stock, but that would be all for him as CUW held a lead with one stock remaining with their first player while CSP moved to their third player. Tyler Wade was called on next and he also fell just short of finishing off their first player, leaving it to Andrew Stroming.

Stroming did manage to take out the top player for the Falcons after dropping his first stock. He continued from there as he grabbed another stock from the next player, but that would be all he could string together as Concordia-Wisconsin jumped out to a 1-0 lead.

The second game of match number two featured Skorseth against CUW's first player. Skorseth followed a similar script to the first game as he managed to take one stock before dropping his three. Stroming moved up to the second spot this time around and took the second stock right off the bat to shift the momentum back towards CSP, but the next three went in favor of the Falcons as they regained their edge. Tyler Wade filled the third slot for the second straight game, surviving on his third stock to knock CUW's first player out. Wade was then knocked out in three straight to send it to Joseph Gonzalez. Gonzalez grabbed one stock from Concordia-Wisconsin before seeing his run come to an end as the Falcons handed CSP their second loss of the night.
