ST. PAUL, Minn. –The Concordia Golden Bears Rocket League team (3-3) earned their first ever back to back sweep in program history with six straight wins over Aquinas (Mich.) (2-3) and Western Kentucky (2-3). Both competitions were in the group stage of the NACE Fall Rocket League Championship.
CSP stuck with last week's starters as junior
Phung Khang, freshman
Brett Mickelson and sophomore
David Voelker rounded out the Golden Bears starting core.
In game one against the Aquinas saints, the Golden Bears defense showed in this game as they got two goals from Mickelson and Voelker and that would be all that they would need as they shut out the saints 2-0. Voelker also earned an assist and made three saves in this game.
In game two it was
Brett Mickelson who stole the show. He scored two goals on five shots and also led the team with four saves. The Saints would answer but it was hopeless as CSP rolled to the 2-1 victory.
The Golden Bears were looking for the clean sweep in game three. The CSP offense broke out as each player scored a goal and once again Mickelson scored two goals. The Saints made it interesting as they scored two goals but the Golden Bear defense held fast and secured the 4-2 victory and claimed the sweep over Aquinas.
CSP looked to keep things rolling into the second game of the night against Western Kentucky. The Hilltoppers right out of the gate were a tough opponent as they were able to keep it one goal game the entire five minutes. The Golden Bears got contributions by both Voelker and Mickelson kept the streak going with his third straight two goal game. CSP held The Hilltoppers to just four shots and won 3-2.
In game two the Golden Bears really separated themselves from Western Kentucky as they outshot The Hilltoppers 11-6.
Phung Khang joined the offensive train as she scored two goals on five shots and Voelker also added in a goal with three saves. Mickelson earned two assists as CSP cruised to a 3-1 victory.
Concordia was looking for a clean sweep over Western Kentucky but The Hilltoppers would not go that easily. They quickly jumped out to a 2-0 lead over the Golden Bears and CSP had to claw their way back into the game as Mickelson and Voelker scored to set up one of the most intense exciting overtimes in Rocket League history. With both teams battling back and forth, with multiple scoring opportunities for each team in the sudden death overtime, it was
David Voelker who scored the game winning goal six minutes and 22 seconds into overtime. Sealing the sweep and the two victories for the Golden Bears on Tuesday night.
CSP is back in action next Tuesday night as they will take on Ontario Tech at 7 pm and Durham (Ontario) at 8:15 pm.
