CSP Travels to Iowa to finish up their non-conference matchups

The Golden Bears will play on Friday and Sunday in Fayette, Iowa.

ST. PAUL, Minn. – The Golden Bear soccer team (1-0) is coming off of a 1-0 shutout victory last Thursday over Missouri-St. Louis in Rockford, Illinois. The Bears will continue their non-conference schedule this weekend as they take on a couple of GLIAC teams. The first will be against Parkside on Friday, September 13th at 3 p.m. They will then take on Davenport University on Sunday, September 15th at 12 p.m. This will be Concordia's final non-conference matchups of the season. Both games will take place at a neutral site in Fayette, Iowa. 
 
LAST TIME OUT
The Golden Bears opened their 2019 schedule with a non-conference game in Rockford Illinois, facing Missouri-St. Louis for the first time in program history. With a tight back and forth game the Bears squad came away with a 1-0 victory. This was the third year in a row that the Bears started the year off with a win, and the second year in a row the Bears started the season with a shutout victory. This was the eighth time overall CSP has started the season with a win in their Division II history.
 
The Bears offense peppered the Tritons net early with six total shots in the first half. Sophomore Jena Berkland got the first shot on goal early in the first half at the two-minute mark, which was saved by UMSL's keeper Amber Hayes. In the 19th minute, Leah Johnson subbed in for Hannah Pedersen and 16 minutes later she took a pass from freshman teammate Katie Anderson and buried a shot from the right wing into the far-left side of the net. Johnson, who didn't have a goal last year recorded her third career goal and first of the 2019 season. Anderson collected her first ever collegiate assist and point. 
 
Concordia held a 10-5 margin in overall shots, while holding the Tritons to only two shots on goal, both of which were stopped by senior goalkeeper Jordyn Clark. Clark, who was 5-2 last season, recorded the shutout victory in net, playing all 90 minutes for the Golden Bears.
 
LAST MEETING VS PARKSIDE (WIS.)
In their last matchup in 2009, the Bears and the then number five ranked Rangers, battled to a 1-1 tie at Tremper High School in Kenosha, Wisconsin. Parkside held a 14-5 margin in shots, including a 7-3 edge in shots on goal. Katie Johnson put two shots on net for the Golden Bears and one of them snuck past Rangers goalkeeper Cassie Glodowski, to get CSP on the board. Meredith Novak, got the lone goal for Parkside and Concordia's keeper, Kaitlin Budd, made six saves in the game while playing in 110 minutes. 
 
PARKSIDE SERIES HISTORY
The Parkside Rangers hold a 4-0-1 record over the Golden Bears Including outshooting the Bears 102-20 in their five matchups. The Bears started playing Parkside in 2002, this will be the first matchup against the Rangers since 2009 and the first time in the Steve Bellis era. The Bears will be looking for their first win over Parkside and their first victory over a GLIAC team. Concordia is currently 0-12-2 in their matchups with GLIAC teams since 1999. 
 
ABOUT THE RANGERS
Parkside went 6-10-2 in 2018 and are currently 0-2 this season. They played a couple of non-conference matchups this past weekend. They fell to Indianapolis at home 0-4 last Thursday, they then traveled to Springfield, Illinois on Sunday and lost 2-3 in a close battle with Illinois Springfield. 
 
The Rangers have 18 returners and nine newcomers. Their top scorer a year ago, Chloe Caves (7), has graduated. Their other top offense threats returning include, Delaney Benich and Maycee Kroening. Together they had a combined 10 goals and 22 points a year ago. Last year's goalies Lara Ferrari and Adrianna Bratel, are both back for this season. They had a combined 123 saves a year ago. 
 
This season the Rangers have been outscored 7-2 and outshot 39-25 in their first two games. 
 
DAVENPORT SERIES HISTORY
The Golden Bears will take on Davenport University for the first time ever in team history this Sunday.
 
ABOUT THE PANTHERS
Davenport went 6-10 last year and are currently 1-1 this season. They played in some non-conference matchups this past weekend. They took on Quincy University at home on Friday and lost 1-0, they then took on Truman State University on Sunday and won 1-0 in an overtime thriller. 
 
The panthers have 14 returners and nine newcomers, among their returners is their top points leader from a year ago, Roheema Bennett. She had three goals, two assists for eight points last season. Another offense threat, Madeleine Zayan, is back for another season. She scored two goals, collected one assists for four points last year. Freshman goalkeeper, Samantha Beckles, has started both games for the Panthers this season. She is 1-1 with 10 saves and a .909 save percentage with one shutout in her freshman campaign. 
 
This season Davenport has recorded one goal, posted 24 shots, has averaged 12 shots per game, has a 4.2 shooting percentage, and 37.5 shots on goal percentage.
