Concordia earned its first postseason appearance in 2019, securing the fourth seed and earning the right to host its first-ever playoff game. With a 15-9 win over No. 5 Davenport in the quarterfinals, CSP now carries a 1-0 postseason record in its third year as an NCAA Division II program.
UIndy, first-time regular season GLIAC champion, is also defending GLIAC Tournament champion. Since the GLIAC started women's lacrosse in 2013, Grand Valley State captured the first four league tournament titles with McKendree breaking the streak in 2017 before UIndy's tournament win last year.
In addition to the competition, the league will recognize its All-Conference selections at the tournament banquet this week (closed to participating teams only). The full team is expected to be announced on Thursday morning by the league office.
SERIES HISTORY: UINDY 4, CONCORDIA 0
The Golden Bears are seeking their first program win against the Greyhounds entering the fifth meeting in the series. After losing by 11 and 16 in the first two contests, CSP has narrowed the gap, falling by eight (18-10) last April in St. Paul before this year's meeting at Sea Foam Stadium was decided by just five goals (16-11). CSP is also seeking its first-ever win over a nationally-ranked opponent (IWLCA DII).
In the last meeting, the Golden Bears and Greyhounds combined for 21 first half goals before slowing the pace in the second half to a crawl with six combined goals in the final 30 minutes. UIndy pulled out the win on CSP's senior day, but Concordia rallied back from an 8-goal first half deficit (12-4) with a 5-0 run to end the first half. The scoring run featured goals by five different players.
The big first half came against a UIndy defense that had allowed 14 total goals across the previous six total games, and hadn't allowed more than nine goals all season with the exception of its lone loss to top-ranked LeMoyne.
Junior goalie
Katie Lottsfeldt then had a big second half, doubling up her first half saves total with six after the break to finish with nine for the game, holding UIndy to just four second half goals. But the Greyhound defense was even more stout, limiting CSP to just two goals in the second half.
Finishing with 11 goals in the game, Concordia produced the second most goals against UIndy on the season while holding UIndy to 16 for the game which was the third fewest the Greyhound offense produced on the year. The five goal margin of victory for UIndy was also their smallest margin of win all year.
In the loss, juniors
Maddie Hentges and
Alina Boyce tied the program's single season goals record (43) with
Kailey Heinl's 2017 total. Hentges had three goals while Boyce had one. The duo each also added an assist.
TOURNAMENT FIELD
Concordia, a third year program in its best season for overall wins, conference wins, its first postseason appearance, first postseason home game and first postseason victory, faces one more hurdle to continue notching program firsts. The GLIAC Tournament semifinal field is comprised of squads CSP has yet to post a victory against. Should Concordia achieve its first win over a ranked squad, first victory over UIndy and first road playoff win on Friday, they'll face another opponent they've yet to beat. CSP is 0-4 against third-seeded McKendree with a pair of close road losses in the series (11-10 on 4/6/18 & 17-12 on 3/24/19) and also 0-4 against Grand Valley State with the closest margins being the most recent two games this year, a pair of 17-4 losses.
