Baseball drops series finale to Northern State

CSP will take on SCSU on Tuesday at 11 a.m.

HOPKINS, Minn. – The Concordia-St. Paul baseball team (17-13, 8-10 NSIC) dropped the final game of the series to Northern State (13-14, 8-8 NSIC) by a score of 12-0 in seven innings on Monday at Hopkins High School.

Concordia will have a quick turnaround as their mid-week doubleheader at St. Cloud State has been moved up a day to Tuesday. First pitch at Faber Field is scheduled for 11 a.m. in the third straight day of action for the Golden Bears.

In Monday's series finale with the Wolves, the Golden Bears saw NSU score in five of their six trips to the plate as they pulled away to invoke the run rule with a final score of 12-0. The Golden Bears were held to three hits on the day as Northern State starter Luke Chevalier (3-3) threw a complete game shutout with six strikeouts.

Ben Suits broke up a perfect game bid with a leadoff single in the fifth while Carter Schmidt added an infield single in the sixth and Steven Nessler roped a triple in the seventh in the loss.

Keanu Mendez (3-3) took the loss on the mound for CSP as he worked the first 4.0 innings with three strikeouts before handing it over to the bullpen. Ross Bastyr and Ray Wellner each added an inning in relief.

Hayden Houts opened the scoring with a run-scoring single in the first before Jordan Malainey drew a bases loaded walk later in the inning to make it 2-0 after one. The Wolves doubled the lead an inning later as Justin Barrenche drove in a run with a single and Chad Hinkle brought home another with a sacrifice fly.

A one-run single off the bat of Dakota Stilson and a two-run double off the bat of Alec Lee pushed the lead to 7-0 through four innings before a two-out error led to four unearned runs an inning later to extend it to 11-0. Nico Pezonella added an RBI infield single in the sixth to bring to the final margin of 12-0.

The Golden Bears are back in action tomorrow as they travel north to take on St. Cloud State in a doubleheader. First pitch in game one is scheduled for 11 a.m.
