Bears clinch home playoff game with big win at Davenport

Heinl's six goal game powers win, propels her to 100 career goals

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - In year three of the Concordia-St. Paul women's lacrosse program, the Golden Bears have secured a GLIAC Tournament home game, defeating Davenport (8-8, 5-6 GLIAC) 17-8 on Sunday morning at DU Turf Field in the regular season finale.

The Golden Bears post their first double-digit win season in team history, improving to 10-6 overall while finishing with a 7-4 record in league play. Concordia improves to 4-0 all-time against Davenport, scoring its biggest margin of victory against the Panthers.

Tentatively, the Golden Bears and Panthers will meet again in the GLIAC Tournament quarterfinals on Tuesday, April 30 with a 6 p.m. start time, however all playoff matchups are subject to change until officially announced by the league office.

In the win, junior Kailey Heinl tied her career high with six goals to become the third player in school history to reach 100 career goals. She added four draw controls, three ground balls and two caused turnovers.

She scored the first two goals of the game and Concordia never looked back, leading for the rest of the contest including a 5-1 start. Carrying a 6-4 lead into halftime, it was the Panthers who scored first in the second half to make it a 1-goal game before CSP put in four of the next five goals to climb back to a four goal margin with 22:15 to play. Davenport scored to make it a three goal gap with 19:20 to go before Heinl used three goals as part of a 5-0 run spanning just under 10 minutes of play to put the game away.

Heinl joins juniors Maddie Hentges and Alina Boyce, who had four and three goals apiece in today's win. In doing so, Hentges and Boyce are tied once again for the single-season goals record with 47 while Boyce claims the lead for the single-season points record with 63.

On defense and in the midfield, sophomore Lexi Stanley had a huge day with eight ground balls and seven draw controls, adding a pair of assists and caused turnovers. Juniors Kaci Reid and Cassidy Leininger had big games, with Reid producing four ground balls and two caused turnovers while Leininger had three ground balls and two caused turnovers.

Senior Izzy Snow added a three-point performance off the bench, with two goals and an assist while adding two ground balls.

In the net, junior Katie Lottsfeldt racked up 10 saves to eight goals allowed to earn the victory while adding two ground balls.

Taylor Ries led Davenport with three goals while Ryann Deuel added two goals, an assist and six draw controls.

In the win, Concordia had a 15-12 margin in draw controls including a 11-5 advantage in the second half leading to an 11-4 second half line score. At the break, CSP had a 7-4 deficit on the draw but still clung to a two goal lead. The draw helped CSP to a 33-24 shot advantage.
