The Bears fall short in game two against Fort Hays State

Danielle Schaub scores a career high 17 points as she leads CSP

ST. JOSEPH, Mo. – In the second game of the Hillyard Tip-Off Classic, and of the regular season, the Concordia-St. Paul women's basketball team (1-1, 0-0 NSIC) fell to #7 Fort Hays State University 67-54 at the Civic Arena in St. Joseph, Missouri. The loss comes after a major upset win against Missouri Western State the night before.
 
Early in the game, the shots weren't dropping for the Golden Bears and they struggled with turnovers, giving the Tigers an early advantage. CSP put 12 points on the board in the first quarter but FHSU was allowed too many second chances and took the lead with 22 going into the second. The Bears brought it back within three points at the half, hitting five out of eight of their three-point attempts after going 0-5 in the first quarter and outshooting Fort Hays 16-9.
 
Down 31-28 at the top of the third, the Bears outscored the Tigers again 18-14 and took the lead 46-45 as junior guard Danielle Schaub drowned three out five three pointers and a layup to speed up the squad's momentum. It was enough to upset the offense of FHSU as the Bears forced four turnovers and the Tigers shot 35% from the field.
 
Despite the lead in the third quarter and outscoring the Tigers by nearly 50% from the three-point line, the Bears allowed a steep amount of second chances and points off turnovers in the fourth. The Tigers went on an 11-0 run and CSP was unable to bounce back, ending the game with their first loss of the season.
 
Schaub led CSP with a new career high of 17 points and nine rebounds. The junior guard also shot the best three-point percentage of her career, going five for eight from the three-point line. Sophomore Meghan DuBois had another solid performance in game two of the Hillyard Tip-Off and also ended in double figures with 10 points, seven rebounds, four assists, and two steals. Senior forward, Cassidy Byrd, made a difference on defense with her six rebounds and finished the game with a late three-pointer in the fourth quarter.
 
The Tigers were led by their senior guard, Kennett Kacey, who scored 20 points for her team and was aggressive on defense with six rebounds and seven steals. Senior forward, Belle Barbieri, for FHSU earned a double-double as she grabbed an impressive 16 rebounds and put 13 points on the board.
