The Golden Bears gear up to take on the Huskies in the Semifinals

CSP hosts St. Cloud State in Semifinal matchup

ST. PAUL, Minn.-The #20 Concordia St. Paul soccer team (16-1-2, 12-1-2 NSIC) will take on St. Cloud State (12-4-3, 10-3-2 NSIC) in the semifinal's tomorrow afternoon at Sea Foam Stadium after they defeated Wayne State 2-0 last night. 
 
With that victory last night, the Golden Bears recorded their first playoff victory since 2006 and their first ever playoff appearance and victory at Sea Foam Stadium. Since Concordia is the highest seed in the NSIC Tournament they will host both semifinals games with Augustana and Minnesota State playing at 11 a.m. tomorrow followed by the Golden Bears and Huskies at 2 p.m. They will also host the championship game on Sunday regardless if Concordia is in the championship game or not. 
 
LAST TIME OUT
The Golden Bears got off to a fast start in the first half, they possessed the ball 56% of the time in the first half along with outshooting the Wildcats 13-3 and 7-1 in shots on goal. In the 15th minute Leah Johnson took a pass from Hannah Pavek and found the back of the net to give the Golden Bears an early 1-0 lead. This Johnson's fifth goal of the season and Pavek's fifth assist. Five minutes later Hannah Pedersen sent a ball into the box and it bounced of Leah Johnson's head and found Nikki Anderson foot and she tipped it in to give CSP a 2-0 lead. This was Anderson's eighth goal of the season, tying her with Katie Anderson for the team lead. This was Pedersen's 12th assist and Johnson's fifth. In the 33rd minute Rylie Wehner had a shot on goal, but Jordyn Clark made the save to shut out the first half. Clark faced three shots and made one save while facing one corner kick in the first 45 minutes. Rachel Grisham faced 13 shots and made five saves in the first half.

In the second half Wayne State tightened up their defense and held the Golden Bears to just four shots with three on net, the Wildcats had three shots with two on goal. In the 47th minute Madison Kemp had a chance for Wayne State and tried to go low, but it was saved on Jordyn Clark. In the 62nd minute Rylie Wehner gave the Wildcats another scoring chance as she tried to go bottom right corner, but it was saved by a shuffling Clark. Jena Berkland had a chance in the 68th minute but it was saved by Grisham. In the 74th minute Leah Johnson tried to get her second goal of the game, but Grisham made the save to keep the Wildcats in the game. But once again the Golden Bear defense and Jordyn Clark shut the door and the Golden Bears recorded their 15th shutout of the season and they will face St. Cloud State in the semifinal matchup tomorrow afternoon.
 
ST. CLOUD STATE SERIES HISTORY 
The Golden Bears hold a 4-9-5 all-time record when facing the Huskies but have not lost to them since 2013. The Golden Bears defeated the Huskies 1-0 earlier this season at home, it was their second victory over St. Cloud State since 2008. Last year's game was decided in a 1-1 tie at Sea Foam Stadium. In the last 10 matchups the Bears are 2-4-4 against the Huskies and in 14 of the 18 games played in the series have been decided by one goal or less and there have been seven games that have gone into at least one overtime. When playing at home, as they do this weekend, CSP is 3-3-3 against St. Cloud State including their win over the Huskies earlier this season at Sea Foam Stadium.
 
LAST MEETING VS SCSU
Both teams played tough in the first half as The Huskies had possession 51% of the half and the Golden Bears had possession 49% of the first half. St. Cloud State recorded six shots with two on net. Both Jenna Dominguez and Carly Ekstrom had scoring chances for the Huskies, but they were shut down by senior goalkeeper Jordyn Clark. The Golden Bears also had scoring chances in the first half as they fired off six shots and four of them were on net. Jena Berkland had two great scoring chances, but Huskies keeper Zoe Welsh came up big and made two great saves. Katie Anderson and Jackie Ehlert also had shots on net, but Welsh shut the door. The Huskie keeper ended the half with four saves. 
 
The second half was just as close and the roles were reversed, as CSP controlled the ball 51% of the time and St. Cloud State possessed the ball 49% of time in the second half. It wasn't until the 83rd minute, seven minutes left in regulation, that the first goal was scored. Golden Bear freshman, Nikki Anderson scored to put CSP up 1-0. The Huskies put the pressure on the Bears in the final minutes, but Concordia's tenacious defense held strong and Jordyn Clark recorded the win and her fourth shutout of the season. The Huskies put up seven shots in the second half with three on goal, the Golden Bears put up six shots with also three shots on goal.
 
Concordia-St. Paul had a total of 12 shots with seven on goal and the Huskies had a total of 13 shots with five on goal in this game. Both Jena Berkland and Nikki Anderson led the offense with each having two total shots on goal in this game. Jackie EhlertEmily Boyer, and Katie Anderson also had a shot on net for the Golden Bears.
 
Jordyn Clark played all 90 minutes and made five saves; she is now 5-0-1 on the season. Clark recorded her fourth shutout of the season and the eighth of her career. Zoe Welsh made six saves and played all 90 minutes while taking the loss for the Huskies. 
 
ABOUT THE HUSKIES
St. Cloud State is 12-4-3 on the year with a 10-3-2 NSIC record. The Huskies have had victories over Minnesota Crookston, Minnesota State, Northern State, Upper Iowa, Winona State, Sioux Falls, Minot State, UMary, MSU Moorhead and Minnesota Duluth. They defeated Bemidji State 1-0 in Bemidji to advance to the semifinals against the Golden Bears. 
 
They had their first NSIC matchups last weekend when they took on the defending NSIC conference champions Bemidji State University on Friday. The two teams battled to a 0-0 tie with BSU holding a slight advantage in shots with 12-11. St. Cloud State would record their first conference victory with a 2-0 win over Minnesota Crookston this past Sunday. 
 
The Huskies have scored 30 goals this season and have given up 14, they have out shot their opponents 310-157, and have a .526 shots on goal percentage while their opponents have a .586 shots on goal percentage. 
 
Their offense is also fairly versatile, as four different players have tallied a goal on the year. Sophomore Claire Shea leads the team with seven goals and five assists for 19 points. Jenna Dominguez has five goals and five assists, Nicole Friis has four goals and four assists, four other Huskies have three goals each and two others have one. Zoe Welsh has played every game for the Huskies making 76 saves for a .844 save percentage and a .70 goals against average along with nine shutouts on the season. 
 
The Golden Bears and Huskies will kick off at 2 p.m. tomorrow at Sea Foam Stadium after the Vikings and Mavericks play at 11 a.m. Both of the semifinal games will be available on live stats and live stream which can be found on the teams schedule page.
