ST. PAUL, Minn. – After a 1-1 start following the Hillyard Tip-Off Classic, the Concordia-St. Paul women's basketball team will host their first game of the regular season on Friday, November 15
th at the Gangelhoff Center. The Golden Bears will face the University of Wisconsin - Parkside Rangers for a non-conference game at 8:00 pm.
LAST TIME OUT
Last weekend, the Golden Bears traveled to St. Joseph, Missouri to compete in the Hillyard Tip-Off Classic hosted by Missouri Western. Concordia went 1-1 in their first two regular season games on November 8
th and 9
th.
In the first face-off, the Bears started out slow and fell 16 points behind Missouri Western in the second quarter. CSP stepped on the court in the second half with a vengeance and took the lead by one point at the end of the third, outscoring MWSU 24-7. The final score was in favor of the Golden Bears with 66-59 on the score board after a dramatic change of pace by CSP on the offensive end.
Meghan DuBois led the Golden Bears in scoring, as the sophomore collected a career high of 19 points and grabbed four rebounds and three assists. Junior
Sidney Wentland was also a spark on the court with 15 points and went 100% from the free throw line.
Riley Wheatcraft displayed a career high in rebounds with nine snags. The junior also put 14 points on the score board for CSP.
The Bears were unstoppable in the second half against Missouri Western and brought the same intensity to the court the next day against #7 Fort Hays State University (2-0). At the half, CSP was within three after hitting five out of eight three-point attempts after going 0-5 in the first quarter and out scoring Fort Hays 16-9.
Junior
Danielle Schaub was the leader against the Wildcats, drowning three three-pointers and a layup in the third quarter to help Concordia take the lead 46-45. Schaub scored a record-high of 17 points and grabbed nine rebounds for the Bears.
Despite the lead, Fort Hays went on an 11-0 run in the fourth quarter and CSP was unable to bounce back, ending the game 67-54 for their first loss of the season.
UNIVERSITY OF WISCONSIN – PARKSIDE HISTORY
As a non-conference match up, Concordia has a 3-0 winning streak against the Rangers. The last victory over Parkside for CSP was on November 16
th, 2013 with a final score of 75-53. The November 15
th meeting will be the third time the Golden Bears have the home-court advantage.
ABOUT THE RANGERS
Parkside will come into the matchup with CSP with a 1-1 record. The Rangers competed in the Midwest Regional Crossover and fell in their first game to Truman State, 71-82. They made a comeback the following day for a win over Quincy University 83-76.
The Rangers went 12-15 in 2018-19, with a conference record of 10-10. The squad loses three of their top four scorers this season. In the GLIAC preseason polls, the Rangers were picked to finish fourth as they return seven players and two starters.
Senior Carolina Rahkonen is a standout for the Rangers and was nominated to the north division team in the GLIAC preseason polls. The guard/forward averaged 12 points, 5.4 rebounds, and 1.5 assists in her junior season. Senior guard, Taylor Stephen, is another strong player for Parkside, totaling 39 points over the first two games.
Other big contributors are sophomore guard Alyssa Nelson who averages 13 points per game so far this season and sophomore guard Maddy Harrison who averages 4.5 rebounds.
Over the two games, Parkside averaged 77 points per game, had a .451 field goal percentage, totaled 64 rebounds, and accumulated 28 assists. Per game, the Rangers averaged 14 turnovers and four steals.
KEY STATS
Meghan DuBois leads CSP in scoring with 28 points and is 12
th in the NSIC for scoring after two games. The sophomore guard has been an aggressive part of the Golden Bear offense and she ranks 13
th in the NSIC in FG% and eighth in assists with an average of 3.5 a game.
Junior guard
Danielle Schaub has been a key attacker on the boards and is leading the team in rebounds with an average of seven per game, ranking 11
th in the NSIC. Schaub is currently second in the conference for 3-pt field goals per game, averaging 3.0 with a 3-pt% of 54.5% percent.
Riley Wheatcraft has also been a solid performer for the Bears as the junior is averaging 11.7 points per game and is second on the team in rebounds with 12 grabs over the first two games.
