Golden Bears drop non-conference meeting with Wayne State

CSP closes out the regular season at home this weekend

ST. PAUL, Minn. – The sixth-ranked Concordia-St. Paul volleyball team (20-7) fell in straight sets (22-25, 19-25, 23-25) in non-conference play on Tuesday night against 13th-ranked Wayne State (23-5) at Gangelhoff Center.

The Wildcats evened the season series at 1-1 while picking up their second win in the last three against CSP. The Golden Bears still hold the overall advantage with a record of 34-14 against Wayne State. The loss was also Concordia's third in a row overall as they have now dropped three straight for the first time since 2001.

On the night, the Golden Bears held a 43-41 edge in kills, a 65-62 edge in digs and a 3-2 edge in service aces, but they fell short in the efficiency category as WSC held a .219-.144 edge in hitting percentage and committed 11 fewer hitting errors.

Concordia had five different players register double figures in digs, led by 17 from Tori Hanson. Erin Fallert followed with 13 digs to go along with eight kills while Jasmine Mulvihill, Payton Nutter and Makenna Berger each contributed 11 digs apiece. Nutter also chipped in 36 assists for the double-double.

Mulvihill once again paced the offense with 14 kills while Sydney Book delivered one of her best performances of the season with 10 kills on just 18 attempts for a .444 hitting percentage.

Kelsie Cada and Tarrin Beller each reached double figures in kills for the Wildcats with 11 and 10, respectively, while Cada also led the team with 16 digs in the win.

The Warriors set the tone from the first serve as they grabbed five of the first six points to take the lead for good in the opening set. CSP responded with three to cut the margin to one, but the lead was pushed all the way out to eight at 16-8 following a 6-1 run a few points later. With the lead still at seven at 20-13, the Golden Bears embarked on an 8-3 run to trim the deficit to two at 23-21, but they were unable to get any closer as WSC held on to win it 25-22.

It was a similar start in the second as the Wildcats grabbed four of the first five before CSP battled back to within one at 6-5. Wayne State put it out of reach from there, however, as they put together a 10-1 run to push the edge to double figures at 16-6. An extended 13-5 run got Concordia back to within two late in the set at 21-19, but WSC responded with four straight to take the second set 25-19.

Concordia took their turn building an early lead in the third set with six of the first eight points, but an 8-3 burst the other way had WSC back within one at 11-10. The Golden Bears grew the lead back out to three at 15-12 before another run, this time a 6-2 run, put the Wildcats in front 18-17. CSP would not lead again as Wayne State took four of the last six to complete the sweep with a 25-23 set win in the third.

Concordia closes out the regular season this weekend with Minnesota Crookston and Bemidji State coming to town.
