ST. PAUL, Minn. – The #6 Concordia-St. Paul volleyball team (21-7, 15-4 NSIC) picked up a sweep (25-22, 25-21, 25-23) on Parent's Night against Minnesota Crookston (4-23, 2-17 NSIC) on Friday night at Gangelhoff Center.
The Golden Bears made it 34 wins in a row over the Golden Eagles as they moved to 34-3 in the all-time series. With Minnesota Duluth's loss against UIU on the night, CSP heads into the final day of the regular season just a game behind UMD and NSU in the NSIC standings.
CSP was forced to grind out the victory offensively as they were held to .238 hitting with 51 kills and 21 errors on 126 swings while the defense limited UMC to just a .185 mark with 31 kills on the night. Concordia also tallied a 10-2 edge in service aces as well as a 56-43 edge in digs in the win.
Makenna Berger played a big role in the serving battle as she matched the program record in the 25 point scoring format with six aces in the match while also chipping in a team-leading 15 digs as well as five kills. Her six aces were the most since
Elizabeth Mohr put up that total against Wayne State back on Oct. 20, 2017.
Jasmine Mulvihill reached 20+ kills for the sixth time this season as she led all players with 21 kills with 12 digs and a .302 hitting percentage.
Kennedy Brady joined her in double figures with 10 kills and a .563 hitting percentage while
Jamie Guptill added a spark with four kills on five swings.
Tori Hanson added 13 digs as well.
Deaira Gresham led UMC with 11 kills while Katie Lienemann added 11 digs in the loss.
Concordia jumped out to an early 6-3 lead and pushed it to five at 10-5, but the Golden Eagles trimmed the deficit to two at 11-9. CSP responded with a 7-2 run to extend the lead out to 18-11 before UMC answered yet again with eight of 10 to pull within a point of tying it up at 20-19. The Golden Bears managed to hang on to the lead, however, as they closed out the first set with a 25-22 set win.
The second set was back and forth early with ten ties through the first 22 points before CSP started to pull away with four straight points. That wouldn't last, however, as an 8-3 run put Minnesota Crookston ahead 19-18. That proved to be their final lead of the set as Concordia finished on a 7-2 run to take a 2-0 lead in the match with a 25-21 win the second.
The Golden Bears picked up where they left off with an 8-3 run to start the third, but UMC once again battled their way back in it. With the lead still at four at 15-11, the Golden Eagles rattled off four in a row and seven of nine to pull ahead 18-17. Their lead eventually grew to three at 22-19, but CSP buckled down from there as they finished on a 6-1 run to take the set 25-23 and the match 3-0.
The Golden Bears close out the regular season tomorrow on Senior Night as they host Bemidji State at 5 p.m.
