Golden Bears overwhelm Tars in weekend finale sweep

CSP uses four runs of at least six straight points to claim three-set victory

BIG RAPIDS, Mich. – The #1 Concordia-St. Paul volleyball team (3-1) finished the weekend on a high note with a sweep (25-20, 25-12, 25-9) of Rollins College (1-3) on Saturday afternoon on the campus of Ferris State.

The Golden Bears bumped their record to 2-0 in the all-time series with the Tars as they bounced back from their first loss of the season in a big way.

Concordia completely shut down the Rollins offense as they allowed just 13 kills total while forcing 18 hitting errors to give the Tars a -.049 hitting percentage for the match. CSP more than tripled that total as they finished with 40 kills and a .243 hitting percentage in the win. Concordia also held an 9-3 edge in service aces as well as a 65-40 edge in digs on the afternoon.

Sara Macek broke out with a big performance for the Goldne Bears as she led all players by a wide margin with 13 kills on just 20 swings with one error for a huge .600 hitting percentage to lead the way.

Brooklyn Lewis and Erin Fallert joined in the effort with eight kills apiece while Lewis hit .350 and Fallert added 13 digs.

Tori Hanson once again led the team in digs as she contributed 15 while Hope Schiller fell one shy of that mark with 14 and Taylor Soine added 11. Hanson also collected a match-best three aces.

Elizabeth Mohr nearly picked up a double-double as she finished the day with 28 assists and eight digs in the win.

Jessika Linnemeyer led the Tars with 10 digs while none of their hitters finished with more than three kills in the losing effort.

CSP and RC traded points for much of the early going as neither team was able to build a lead larger than two through the first 24 combined points. The Tars erased a 7-5 Concordia lead with a 5-1 run as they matched their largest lead of the set at 10-8. With the lead still at two a couple of points later, the Golden Bears took control with a 6-0 run to pull out to a 15-11 lead. Concordia tacked onto their lead with another 4-0 run to make it 20-13 before cruising to a 25-20 set win to start the match.

Rollins jumped out to a quick 5-1 lead in the second set, but the Golden Bears came storming back with eight straight points to build a four point lead of their own. The Tars kept things close through the middle of the set as the gap remained four at 16-12, but that would be all the scoring they could muster as Concordia hammered out nine points in a row to win the set 25-12.

CSP got off to a better start in the third with seven of the first 10 before RC grabbed three straight to cut it back to one. The Golden Bears followed with another massive run as they scored the next eight points as a part of a larger 11-1 run that pushed the score to 18-7. After two points in favor of Rollins, the Golden Bears slammed the door with seven in a row to complete the sweep with a 25-9 set win in the third.

The Golden Bears resume play next Friday in their annual trip to the Colorado Premier Challenge. CSP will face Texas A&M-Commerce at noon and MSU Denver at 7 p.m. before playing two more matches on Saturday.
