ST. PAUL, Minn. - In their final preseason tune-up, Concordia-St. Paul women's lacrosse cruised to a 17-2 exhibition victory over Hamline University on Saturday afternoon at the Concordia Dome at Sea Foam Stadium in front of a strong preseason crowd. The Golden Bears now look to the start of the regular season, opening non-conference action at home next Friday at 6 p.m. against #3 Lindenwood in the Concordia Dome.
For Concordia, it marks an impressive finish to the preseason with a 34-6 goal margin against the University of Minnesota club squad and an NCAA Division III Tournament team from a year ago in Hamline. The Pipers were picked to win the MWLC after finishing second overall in the standings a year ago prior to winning the conference tournament to secure a bid in the NCAA tournament field.
The teams played a 20-minute first and 25-minute second half, knocking 15 minutes off of a regulation contest but played the entire second half with stop time, allowing the teams to continue at a normal pace of play in the preseason contest. Multiple officials cycled in-and-out, providing a solid training atmosphere between the two St. Paul private universities.
Four players scored hat tricks for the Golden Bears: sophomores
Alina Boyce,
Maddie Hentges,
Kailey Heinl and freshman Raeyln Korinek. Boyce led the team with five points, as she also added a pair of assists while the other three all had an assist for four-point performances. Also adding a four point game, all via the assist, was junior
Sheala Osborne as five players achieved four points in the game.
Senior Kalle LaValle added three points with a goal and pair of assists. In all, eight players had two or more points, eight different players scored at least a goal and the team's offense was crisp and efficient with only two unassisted goals on the day.
In the opening minutes, Hentges fed Heinl for the game's first goal and although Hamline tied the game just over a minute later on a goal from
Maya Hernandez, the Bears would proceed to score the next 14 goals including a 12-1 lead at the half.
The defense kept things clean for goalie
Katie Lottsfeldt, who played all 45 minutes and registered three saves while allowing just two Piper goals. She also secured seven ground balls and caused a pair of turnovers with her active style in the cage causing a distraction to Hamline's attack.
In front of Lottsfeldt, the defensive starting combination of
Cassidy Leininger,
Kylie Christensen,
Sara Stickler and
Tia Zachman helped allow only seven total shots (five on goal) in the game and Hamline was unsuccessful on just two total clear attempts in the first half (5-11 in the game).
Concordia was aggressive all over the field, causing 20 turnovers as Hamline committed 30 total in the game and CSP doubled up the Pipers with a 32-16 margin in ground balls. Concordia had 13 different players record a caused turnover led by freshman
Margot Coomes with three off the bench. She also added a pair of goals, three ground balls and two draw controls in a strong all-around effort.
The ground balls were also spread around the squad well, with 14 players scooping up a key loose ball with freshman
Lexi Stanley backing up Lottsfeldt's seven with four of her own while adding a pair of caused turnovers in a reserve role.
In the midfield, Korinek was key in securing a game-high five draw controls as the Bears converted all 12 clear attempts to spark an efficient transition from the defensive end to its attack.
