Golden Bears sweep Vikings on Friday night

CSP heads to final day of regular season in tie for first in NSIC

ST. PAUL, Minn. – The #6 Concordia-St. Paul volleyball team (22-6, 16-3 NSIC) put together a dominant effort in a sweep (25-20, 25-12, 25-20) of Augustana (10-17, 5-14 NSIC) on Parents Night at Gangelhoff Center.

The Golden Bears head into the final day of the regular in position to claim at least a share of their 15th NSIC regular season crown in the past 16 seasons. Cocnordia remains in a three-way tie atop the standings with Minnesota Duluth and Northern State and can ensure they finish at least even with those two with a win over Wayne State on Saturday. First serve is scheduled for 2 p.m. at Gangelhoff Center as CSP will celebrate Senior Day.

With the win, Concordia picked up their 25th consecutive win over the Vikings as they moved to 25-1 in the all-time series. While the Golden Bears have won 25 in a row over Augie, the sweep was CSP's first three-set win over Augustana in the past six meetings.

The Golden Bears kept the Vikings off-balance with a strong serving performance as they put up their third match with double digits in aces at 10. CSP's offense also took care of business with a .384 hitting percentage as they tallied 44 kills with six errors in a strong all-around effort. On the other side of the net, Augie finished the match at .227 hitting with just one ace.

Hope Schiller did a little bit of everything in the match as she matched her career best with five aces while also tallying a double-double with 10 kills and 10 digs in the win. Elizabeth Mohr also matched a season high in aces with three to go along with 38 assists and five digs.

Offensively, Sara Macek was a force with 11 kills and no errors on 15 swings for a massive .733 hitting percentage. She also added three total blocks, including two solo blocks. Brooklyn Lewis matched Macek with 11 kills and three blocks while adding seven digs and an ace as well as a .417 hitting percentage.

Courtney Place paced the Vikings with 11 kills while Hanna Justesen put up match-high 13 digs in the loss.

Concordia got off to a fast start with eight of the first 11 points of the match, but the Vikings quickly clawed their way back in it. With the lead out to six at 11-5, Augie strung together a 6-2 run to pull within two midway through the set. The CSP lead was back out to five at 17-12, but the Vikings bounced back once again with a 4-0 run to close the gap to one. The Golden Bear advantage remained one at 20-19, but they limited Augustana to just a single point the rest of the way as they finished on a 5-1 run to win the set 25-20.

After the two teams split the first 10 points of the second set, the Golden Bears took over. CSP grabbed four points in a row and 11 of 12 to extend their lead to double figures at 16-6. After a point for the Vikings broke the streak, Concordia rattled off another 4-0 before ballooning their lead to as many as 14 at 23-9. The Golden Bears put the set away a few points later at 25-12 to build a 2-0 lead in the match.

The Concordia dominance carried over into the third set as they scored the first three points and seven of the first eight to build an early cushion. The Vikings fought their way back in it with eight of the next 11 to cut it to one at 10-9, but that would be all the closer they would get with the next four in a row going to CSP. The lead for the Golden Bears reached seven at 17-10 and remained six or more until the final few points. With CSP forcing match point at 24-16, Augie survived four in a row before Concordia closed it out at 25-20.
