BEMIDJI, Minn. – The fourth-ranked Concordia-St. Paul volleyball team (18-4, 12-1 NSIC) continued their dominance of Bemidji State (5-16, 2-11 NSIC) as they claimed a road sweep (25-18, 25-13, 25-23) on Friday night to extend their winning streak in the series to 31.
The sweep was CSP's 12
th in a row against BSU as 29 of their 31 wins in a row have been three-setters. Overall, Concordia moves to 33-8-1 against the Beavers. The Golden Bears also maintained their foothold at the top of the standings in the NSIC as both CSP and NSU have dropped just one conference contest so far this year.
Concordia did a little bit of everything in the win as they collected 45 kills compared to 26 for BSU while also tallying a .283-.110 edge in hitting percentage, a 7-5 edge in service aces, and a 45-44 edge in digs.
The offense was fairly evenly spread for CSP as four different players finished between eight and 12 in kills in the win.
Sara Macek led the way once again with 12 kills while also filling the stat sheet elsewhere with four blocks, a career-high three service aces and a pair of digs. She was joined by
Sydney Book in double figures in kills as she picked up 10 kills on the night.
While Macek's three service aces were a career best,
Brooklyn Lewis matched that total for a career best of her own. The total was especially impressive as both more than doubled their career output in that category as they entered the night with two apiece. Lewis also chipped in nine kills while
Hope Schiller followed close behind with eight kills and eight digs.
Elizabeth Mohr finished with an even 13.00 assists per set on the night to give her 39 total while she fell two digs shy of double digits with eight.
Tori Hanson was the lone Golden Bear in double figures with 12 digs.
Anna Averkamp led the Beavers with eight kills while Mary Campbell collected a double-double with 20 assists and 10 digs in the loss.
After the Beavers took an early 4-3 lead in the opening set, CSP rattled off six straight points to take control with a 9-4 lead of their own. Bemidji State was able to shrink the gap back to three and remained within four at 12-8, but another CSP burst, this time a 5-0 run, pushed it out to 17-8. Concordia continued to maintain a comfortable advantage for the remainder of the set as they cruised to a 25-18 set win to get off to a strong start in the match.
The Golden Bears picked up where they left off to start the second set as 11 of the first 14 points went in their favor to give them a quick eight point lead. A 6-0 run two points later ballooned the lead to double figures at 17-5 as CSP held a lead of 11 or more the rest of the way. The differential grew to as many as 13 before Concordia settled for a 25-13 final to pull within a set of completing the sweep.
The third set proved to be the most competitive of the night as the two teams went back and forth throughout. BSU opened with a 4-2 run before three in a row for Concordia put CSP out front. The Beavers answered with a 3-0 run of their own, but another four straight for the Golden Bears made it 9-7 in favor of Concordia. A 5-1 run a few points later grew the CSP lead to 14-10 before yet another run shifted the momentum, this time five straight for Bemidji State to give the Beavers a 15-14 edge. The lead shifted in both directions until the 20-20 mark when Concordia scored three in a row to go ahead 23-20. Bemidji State managed to close the gap back to one at 23-22 and again at 24-23 before the Golden Bears closed it out at 25-23.
The Golden Bears continue action tomorrow afternoon with a 4 p.m. first serve at Minnesota Crookston.
