Bears struggle in 85-66 loss against #12 Augustana

B. Miller and Schaub hit career-highs in Sioux Falls

Sioux Falls, S.D. – The Concordia-St. Paul women's basketball team (4-11, 1-8 NSIC) dropped their second game of the weekend against #12 Augustana (14-0, 10-0 NSIC) 85-66 at the Elmen Center in Sioux Falls, South Dakota.  
 
Sophomore Brianna Miller continued her streak of solid performances for the Bears, scoring a career-high 18 points, to make that her fourth straight game in double digits. The Lakeville native also finished with seven rebounds and four assists and shot 66.6% (8-12) from the field, including hitting two threes in three attempts.
 
Junior Anna Schmitt and freshman Danielle Schaub were the other CSP players to end with double figures. Schmitt connected on four out of her five three-point attempts (80.0%) to tally 12 points for the Bears. Schaub had a career-high ten points while also dishing out four assists. Junior Kayla Miller also had a noteworthy performance, finishing with a game-high eight rebounds while also chipping in nine points and four assists.
 
Shooting 53.0% (35-66) from the field really helped the Vikings, as they scored 56 points in the paint, while also capitalizing on 29 points off of 19 CSP turnovers. The Bears, on the other hand, shot only 39.1% (25-64) from the field, but shot 41.7% (10-24) from three, connecting on twice as many as their opponents (5-24) in the same number of attempts. Both teams ended with 36 rebounds, although the Vikings scored four more second chance points (17-13).
 
The Vikings got off to a hot start, going on a 12-0 run to start the game. Schmitt hit a three to get CSP on the board, but the Vikings soon regained their double digit lead with 3:08 left in the first quarter. They would retain this double digit lead for the rest of the game. After the first ten minutes of play, the Bears trailed 25-9, and the Vikings continued their tough defensive pressure to build up their lead in the second quarter to lead by 23 at halftime, 51-28.
 
The second half belonged to the Vikings as well, as they maintained their large lead, at one point leading by 30 in the third quarter.  The Bears finished the game on a 9-3 run to get the game within 19 as time expired.
 
The Vikings had ten different players score, and were led by the O'Farrell twins. Presley O'Farrell led all scorers with 20 points and also had a game-high five steals.  Logan O'Farrell was another key factor for the Vikings, finishing with 17 points, four blocks, three steals, four assists, and four rebounds. Naomi Rust rounded out Augustana players in double figures with 16 points, while also securing a team-high six rebounds.
 
The Bears will continue their conference schedule on the road next weekend when they will face U-Mary on Friday, January 12th at 6 p.m. and Minot State the following day at 4 p.m. Follow along with all the action at cspbears.com/watch.
