Bears go .500 on the weekend

ST. PAUL, Minn. - The Concordia Golden Bears (1-1) lost a tight match against the Lindenwood Saints (2-0) in overtime on Sunday afternoon at Sea Foam Stadium.  The loss caps off a .500 opening weekend for the Bears.

This is not the first time that these two teams have needed overtime to declare a winner. Last year, the Saints pulled out a 2-1 victory over the Bears in double overtime in Missouri.

The first half opened with fairly even back-and-forth play between the Bears and the Saints. Despite being outshot 6-1 in the first half, the Bears dominated play in the later part of the half, keeping the ball on the Saints' half and creating many opportunities near the goal. Although there were opportunities, the Bears and Saints finished the half 0-0.

During the second half there were multiple plays that threatened to break the tie. Within the 72nd minute, the Bears fired three shots at the Saints' goal. First, Jade Weller hit the crossbar after a free kick was awarded to the Bears due to a Saints yellow card. Then off the rebound, sophomore Carly Simonian put up a shot that was blocked within the box by a Saints defender. Freshman Haleigh Bares finished the shooting spree with a shot that was saved by the Saints goalie, senior Mary McGilvray.  McGilvray ended up with five saves on the day.

The Saints also had some chances in the second half. In the 79th minute, the Saints' Jamie Rozzell fired a shot that hit the post and then teammate Becky Roberts shot the rebound, but missed wide.
With under four minutes left in the second half, sophomore Hannah Pederson created some excitement by beating the goalie in the box, but the ball went out of bounds before she could capitalize. The Bears ended up having the advantage in shots in the second half (7-5). The 0-0 score held as time dwindled in the second half and overtime ensued.

The break in the stalemate came in 94th minute of play, where Roberts headed in the only shot of overtime and the only goal of the game off a corner kick taken by teammate Jordan Wipke.

Sophomore Emily Nelson would take the loss for the Bears and is now 1-1 on the season.  She tallied six saves, which is the fourth time in her career where she has recorded six or more saves in a single game.

The Bears have over a week off before they compete next. They take on Viterbo (Wis.) on Monday, September 11th at 7 p.m. at Sea Foam Stadium. CSP looks to tie up the series against Viterbo, after losing 3-1 in La Crosse last year. If you are unable to come watch, follow along online at cspbears.com/watch.
