Golden Bears win last non-conference match

CSP wins 1-0 against Viterbo as they gear up for conference play

ST. PAUL, Minn. - The Concordia-St. Paul soccer team won 1-0 against the Viterbo V-Hawks (2-3-2) on Monday night at Sea Foam Stadium to improve their record to 2-1 on the season. This was the last non-conference game for the Golden Bears before they begin conference play this upcoming weekend.

The Bears tied up the cumulative series with Viterbo 2-2 with tonight's victory. The V-Hawks won in the 2014 and 2016 seasons and the Bears won in 2015 and now again in 2017. In the 2016 matchup, the V-Hawks outscored the Bears 3-1, with junior Jordan Rowan-Stafford scoring the Bears' only goal with 20 seconds left in the game.

This year, the Golden Bears dominated the majority of the game, outshooting the V-Hawks 21-2. This is the most shots and shots on goal that the Bears have had so far this season. Rowan-Stafford and freshman Haleigh Bares led the way on offense, each recording four shots apiece.

In the first half the Bears fired eight shots but were unable to find the back of the net. As the second half rolled around, the Bears once again had the advantage in shots, taking a total of 13 in the half, six of which were on goal. The V-Hawks goalie, freshman Abby Breitbach, was busy all night and took the loss despite having seven saves in the match.

The tie was broken in the 67th minute by freshman forward Tori Jensen when she took a leading pass from teammate Hannah Pederson, got past the opponent's defenders, and buried it in the corner of the net. This was Jensen's first career goal and Pedersen's first career point.

In net, sophomore Jordyn Clark recorded her second career win and her first career shutout.

Golden Bear fans were able to see 23 of the 27 players on the CSP roster compete, with four players making their collegiate debuts.

The Golden Bears open up their conference schedule this weekend, playing against St. Cloud State on Saturday, September 16th and University of Duluth on Sunday, September 17th. Last year, both of these games ended in a tie for the Bears and their opponents. Against Duluth, the game ended 1-1; against St. Cloud it was a little higher scoring, ending 3-3.
