ST. PAUL, Minn. – The Concordia-St. Paul softball team (11-24, 3-11 NSIC) dropped both games in their midweek doubleheader against Upper Iowa (12-23, 4-9) Wednesday afternoon. The Peacocks took game one by a score of 5-2 and then scored three runs in the seventh to take game two 4-1 .
GAME 1: Upper Iowa 5, Concordia-St. Paul 2
After stranding a runner in scoring position in the first, Upper Iowa brought two runs home in the second thanks to a Julia Buffington 2-run home run.
The Peacocks would make it a 3-0 game in the top of the third off a RBI double by Shannon Nix with one out.
In the fourth
Liz Jarosz would lead off the inning with a double to center field. Two batters later,
Sarah Kivisto would bring her home a one out, RBI double to get Concordia on the board.
The Golden Bears would get out of a jam in fifth and retire UIU in order in the sixth keeping it at a two run deficit.
Justine Schattner would pull CSP within one run as she led off the bottom of the sixth with a solo home run. Kivisto would single two batters later and then steal second, but could not be brought home to tie the game leaving it a 2-3 deficit.
In the seventh, Upper Iowa would lead off the inning with a pair of singles before Tara Walls would bring home both runners with a RBI double making it a 5-2 Peacock lead.
The Golden Bears were unable make any comeback attempt as they went down in order in the bottom of the seventh, dropping game one by the final score of 5-2.
Haley Schanks (0-3) took the loss for game one, pitching two innings, allowing two runs and three hits while striking out one. Erin Drahozal claimed her fourth win of the season going the distance, surrendering five hits, allowing two runs and striking five.
Kivisto led Concordia with two hits and a RBI. Schattner, Jarosz, and
Lily Langevin each added one hit for the Golden Bears. Schattner's home run is her third of the season.
Sami Kay Shafranski, Tara Walls, and Julia Buffington all finished with a pair of hits for Upper Iowa. As a team the Peacocks compiled nine hits in game one. Walls and Buffington each finished with two RBI in the game.
GAME 2: Upper Iowa 4, Concordia-St. Paul 1
Carlie Hart didn't wait long to give the Golden Bears a runner in scoring position as she led off the first with a double.
Lily Langevin would then reach first on a fielder's choice but Hart would be tagged out at third.
Langevin would then steal second and advance to third on a throwing error by UIU giving the Golden Bears another scoring opportunity. After
Justine Schattner drew a walk,
Liz Jarosz would line out to deep right field allowing Langevin to tag from third and give CSP the early 1-0 lead.
Upper Iowa would tie the game at one in the top of the third after Sammy Garrett drove in Riley Kruel from third with a RBI single.
The Peacocks had a chance to break the tie in the fourth as they stranded a runner on third keeping the game tied. Concordia then had their chance to take the lead in the bottom of the sixth after
Justine Schattner doubled with two outs, Liz Jarsoz would hit a shallow single to left field and Schattner would be thrown out at home to end the inning.
In the top of the seventh, Jordyn Brennan would lead off the inning with a double and then Katie Sammons would single off a bunt, moving Brennan to third.
Brennan would then score the go ahead run after a fielding error by Concordia to give Upper Iowa their first lead of the game.
Julia Buffington would then drive the first pitch she saw to center field, scoring Shannon Nix from third. Riley Kruel would then fly out to left field scoring Sammons from third making it a 4-1 Peacock advantage.
Like game one, the Golden Bears would go down in order in the seventh dropping game two of the doubleheader 4-1.
Samantha Sullivan (5-11) took the loss pitching the final two innings, while allowing four hits and three runs. Emily Kisch earned her sixth win of the season pitching all seven innings, allowing six hits, one run and striking out five.
Nine different players recorded a hit for UIU and four different players recorded a RBI in the win.
Justine Schattner went a perfect 2-2 at the plate to lead Concordia.
