BEMIDJI, Minn. – The Concordia-St. Paul softball team (11-26, 3-13 NSIC) was swept by Bemidji State (20-11, 10-6) Friday afternoon at BSU Softball Field. The Beavers scored three runs in seventh of game two after trailing 3-1 to complete the comeback and the sweep.
GAME 1: Bemidji State 8, Concordia-St. Paul 3
Bemidji State got on the board just two batters into the game after Jessica Burlingame reached third on a field error, Brooke Phillips would then bring her home with an RBI double giving BSU an early 1-0 lead.
The Beavers made it a 5-0 advantage in the second inning after Burlingame smashed a one out grand slam to centerfield. BSU finished with five hits in the inning.
Following a scoreless third, Bemidji State added their sixth run of the game as Phillips singled down the left field line scoring Angie Roberts from third.
Concordia was finally able to get on the board in the bottom of the fourth.
Justine Schattner led off the inning with a single and then three batters later,
Linzy Heim would then bring her home with a two out, RBI double.
Sarah Kivisto would then bring Heim home, the following at bat with a single up the middle to make it a 6-2 game.
BSU would score their final two runs of the game in the top of the fifth when Olivia Tucker would record a bases load RBI single. Burlingame would then reach on fielder's choice scoring Makayla Pagel from third to giving them an 8-2 lead.
After a scoreless sixth inning and still trailing by six runs, the Golden Bears were only able to get one run across the board in the seventh when
Carlie Hart scored on wild pitch to bring it to the final score of 8-3.
Despite the loss, Hart, Langevin, and Schattner produced very well at the top of the CSP batting order. Hart and Langevin each finished 3-4 at the plate, while Schattner went 2-4.
Brook Phillips and Alexandra Ripka finished with multiple hits going 3-4 and 2-4 at the plate, respectively for the Beavers. Eight different BSU batters finished with a hit.
Jessica Yost (16-3) came away with the win in the circle as she went the distance, allowing 11 hits, three runs and striking out 11 CSP batters.
Haley Schanks (0-4) took the loss for Concordia going one and a third, allowing six hits, five runs (four earned), with no strike outs.
GAME 2: Bemidji State 4, Concordia-St. Paul 3
The Golden Bears jumped out to the early lead in game two as
Carlie Hart led off the bottom of the first with a triple and then scored when Langevin grounded out to second giving CSP a 1-0 lead.
Neither team recorded a hit in the second and third innings, but in the fourth Concordia added two more runs to their lead.
With runners on second and third and no outs
Linzy Heim would reach first on throwing error by the Beavers allowing
Liz Jarosz to score from third. The following at bat
Sarah Kivisto would reach first on a fielding error, which scored
Haley Schanks from third giving Concordia a 2-1 lead.
CSP had another opportunity to add to their lead as
Lily Langevin tripled with only one out, but BSU would get out of the jam leaving Langevin stranded at third.
The Beavers would get their first run on the board in the sixth off a solo home run by Alexandra Ripka to make it a 3-1 game.
In the bottom of the sixth Concordia had yet another chance to add to their lead as they put runners on second and third with only one out, but yet again BSU would get out of the jam keeping it a two run game heading into the final inning of play.
Trailing by two, Bemidji State led off the seventh with a double and then a ground out would move the runner over to third. A walk would then put runners on the corners with one out.
Rachel Burkland would then come in to pinch and she would deliver with a RBI single through the right side scoring Pagel from third and cutting the CSP lead to just one. Two batters later with runners on first and second and two outs, Brooke Phillips hit a single and the get caught in a run down between first and second allowing both runners to score before she was tagged giving the Beavers a 4-3 lead.
The Golden Bears last chance to tie or win the game came up short in the bottom of the seventh as Hart was thrown out trying to steal second. Following a walk CSP would then ground into a double play to end the game dropping game two, 4-3.
Jessica Yost would come in to relief in the fifth inning and would earn her 17th win of the season. She allowed two hits, no runs, and struck out three in three innings of work.
Linzy Heim (6-11) took the tough loss for Concordia, pitching the final inning while allowing two hits and two runs.
Six different players finished with one hit for BSU. Phillips, Ripka, and Burkland all finished with a RBI in the win. Five different players finished with one hit for CSP and Langevin, Heim and Kivisto all added a RBI in the loss.
Concordia is back in action tomorrow as they travel to Minnesota Crookston. First pitch for game one will be at 12 pm.
