Schanks and Jarosz launch CSP past Wildcats for sweep

Schanks and Jarosz each finished with a pair of home runs on the day

ST. PAUL, Minn. –  The Concordia-St. Paul softball team (10-15, 2-2 NSIC) opened up their weekend home stand with a sweep of Wayne State (6-22, 0-4 NSIC). CSP won game one by a score of 7-4 and game two by a final of 11-9.

GAME 1: Concordia-St. Paul 7, Wayne State 4
After both teams went down in order in the first, the CSP bats came alive in the second as Sarah Kivisto and Haley Schanks singled to give Concordia a scoring chance. The Golden Bears, however, would strand the runners keeping the game scoreless.

Wayne State would break the tie in the third with runners on first and second and only one out, Monique Alyea ripped a liner to the gap in right-center field scoring Sarah Hunter from second. Aleya would be thrown out at second and strand a runner on third.

CSP would not trail for long as they tied the game in the home half of the third. With two outs and a runner on second, Justine Schattner would line a hit to center field scoring Nicole Thompson from second to tie the game at one.

In the fourth the Golden Bears had a chance to take a lead but were unable to bring Emily Shinn home from second keeping the game notched at one.

The tie would be broken in the fifth as WSC put runners on the corners with two outs before Emily Chandler hit the first pitch she saw up the middle, scoring the go-ahead run from third. The Wildcats would then load the bases but the CSP defense got Sullivan out of the jam and kept it at a one run game.

Concordia would answer in a big way in the home half of the fifth as they scored five runs on five hits to take a 6-2 lead.

After a pair of singles to lead off the bottom of the fifth, Justine Schattner would line out to center field before Liz Jarosz blasted a 3-run homer to left field on a full count to give CSP their first lead of the game at 4-2.

Haley Schanks would follow suit as she launched a solo homerun to straight away center in the following at bat giving Concordia a 5-2 lead.

The fifth run of the inning for Concordia would come courtesy of a RBI double by Elena Koncar with runners on first and second making it a 6-2 Golden Bear advantage.

Wayne State would cut into the CSP lead as Jordyn Breitbarth hit a 2-run home run to left field making it a 6-4 game and no outs. Schanks would come in to relieve starting pitcher Samantha Sullivan after the home run and thanks to some solid defense, Concordia would not surrender anymore runs to hold a 6-4 lead.

The Golden Bears would an insurance run in the bottom of the sixth as Carlie Hart would score from second off a sacrifice bunt by Nicole Thompson to make it a 7-4 game. The Wildcats would get a runner in scoring position in the seventh but the defense of Concordia prevented any comeback attempt giving CSP a game one win.

Sullivan (5-6) took the win for the Golden Bears as she went five innings, allowing six hits, four runs and striking out five. Schanks earned her first save of the year pitching two innings and only allowing one hit and no runs.

Carlie Hart led the way for CSP going 3-4 at the plate and scoring two runs. Schanks and Koncar each went 2-3 and five other players each recorded a hit in the game one win.

Nataliah Hopkins (6-12) took the loss for WSC and Monique Alyea led the way going 2-3 at the plate with a RBI.

GAME 2: Concordia-St. Paul 11, Wayne State 9
After a three up and three down first inning, Haley Schanks would break the tie with a 2-run home run to center field giving CSP an early 2-0 lead.

The Wildcats would get a lead-off double in the third by Katelyn Wobken and then she would score on the following at bat off a throwing error by Concordia to make it a 2-1 game.

In the fourth Jenna Stewart would give WSC their first lead of the game with a two RBI single to right field making it a 3-2 Wildcat advantage. Wayne State would make it a two run game later in the inning as Stewart would score on a wild pitch.

Concordia would not trail for long as they put together five runs in the bottom of the fourth to take a 7-4 lead. After a walk to lead off the home half of the fourth, Lizzy Swenson would line a double to left center putting runners on second and third with no outs.

Carlie Hart would then double scoring both runners and tying the game at four. Lily Langevin would single in the following at bat putting runners on the corners. Justine Schattner would then hit a sacrifice fly to right field scoring Hart from third and giving Concordia a 5-4 lead.

With runners on second and third and two outs, Haley Schanks would continue her impressive day at the plate coming up with a two RBI single making it a 7-4 Golden Bear lead.

Wayne State would tie the game back up in the fifth getting one run off a bases loaded wild pitch and then a two RBI single by Wobken to tie the game at seven.

The Golden Bears would respond yet again in the home half of the fifth bringing home four runs to take an 11-7 lead.

Elena Koncar led off the inning with a solo home run to break the tie. Concordia would then get a walk and single but then after back-to-back fielder's choices it looked as if Wayne State was going to get out of the jam.

Liz Jarosz did not let that happen as she hit a monster home run to center field with runners on second and third to give CSP their 11-7 lead.

In the sixth, the Wildcats would get two runs off a RBI double and single to make it a two run game. However, in the top of the seventh Samantha Sullivan would be brought in to close the game and after a nice double play by the Concordia defense, Sullivan would strikeout the final batter giving the Golden Bears the 11-9 win and series sweep.

Linzy Heim (5-7) took the win for Concordia going five innings, allowing nine hits, and seven runs (six earned). Schanks and Sullivan pitched the final two innings, respectively and Sullivan came away with her first save of the year.

Hart led the way going 3-5 at the plate with two RBI while Jarosz, Schanks and Koncar all finished with a pair of hits for the game. Jarosz and Schanks combined for seven and team's 11 RBI on the game.

Riley Vanderveen (0-7) took the loss for the Wildcats as she went four and two-thirds, allowing nine hits and seven earned runs with one strikeout.

Four players recorded multiple hits for WSC led by Katelyn Wobken and Jordyn Breitbarth who each finished with three hits on the game. Wobken and Jenna Stewart each finished two RBI in the loss.
