ST. PAUL, Minn. – The Concordia-St. Paul softball team (10-17, 2-4 NSIC) concluded their weekend home stand against Augustana (19-9, 4-2 NSIC) Sunday afternoon dropping scores of 7-1 and 11-7, respectively.
GAME 1: Augustana 7, Concordia-St. Paul 1
Augie jumped out to an early 1-0 lead in the top of the second after Kara McDougall beat out an infield single allowing Abby Chandler to score from third with two outs.
The Vikings made it a 2-0 game after Shannon Peterson led off the fourth inning with a solo home run to left-center field. The home run is her fourth home run of the year.
In the fifth AU would add a third run courtesy of a two out RBI double by Sarah Kennedy, scoring Samantha Eisenreich from third.
The Golden Bears were finally able to get their first in the bottom of the fifth off a
Haley Schanks double to right-center field with one out. Schanks would end up being stranded on second as CSP could not bring her home.
Augustana would add two more runs in the sixth on a crazy run down sequence. With runners on second and third Kara McDougall would reach on a fielder's choice as Concordia attempted to get Shannon Peterson out at home but missed the tag. McDougall would then try to sneak to second but got caught in a run down and was eventually tagged out. During the run down Kylie Rome was able to score from second to make it a 5-0 lead for the Vikings.
The runs would continue to come for Augie in the seventh as Kylie Rome drove in two runs with a bases loaded, two RBI single making it a 7-0 game.
Liz Jarosz was able to get Concordia on the board in the bottom of the seventh with a solo home run to left-center field. It is her team-leading sixth home run of the season and her third home run of the weekend.
Sarah Kivisto would then follow with a double and Schanks singled to put runners on the corners with no outs. Two batters later with one out
Elena Koncar would walk to load the bases but the Golden Bears were unable to bring home any more runs as the final two batters recorded outs giving Augustan the 7-1 win.
Lexy Pederson came away with her 10th win of the season for AU going the distance, allowing four hits, one run while striking out seven. Pederson had only allowed one hit prior to the seventh inning.
Samantha Sullivan (5-7) took the tough game one loss also going the distance but allowing 11 hits, seven runs (five earned) and striking out one.
Sarah Kennedy led the way for AU at the plate going 3-4 with one RBI and a run scored. Shannon Peterson and Kylie Rome added a pair of hits for the Vikings in the win.
Schanks led CSP with two hits and a double, while Jarosz and Kivisto each went 1-3 at the plate.
GAME 2: Augustana 11, Concordia-St. Paul 7
To start game two, the Vikings would load the bases with no outs but the pitching of
Linzy Heim and the Concordia defense prevented any damage being done, getting out of the jam and keeping the game scoreless.
The Golden Bears would come out strong in the first inning using a pair of throwing errors by AU to jump ahead 2-0. The runs would not stop there for CSP as Jarosz would draw walk before
Haley Schanks would clear the bases with one swing of bat for her fourth home run of the season making it a 4-0 advantage after one inning of play.
In the second, CSP would load the bases with one out but were only able to bring one run home off a wild pitch to make it a 5-0 Concordia advantage.
Augustana would get on the scoreboard in the top of the fourth thanks to a two RBI single by Samantha Eisenreich scoring both runners on second and third to make it a 5-2 game.
The Golden Bears had a chance to add to their lead in the home half of the fourth with runners on second and third and only one out, but were unsuccessful in bringing either runner home, keeping it a three run game.
In the fifth, the Vikings would bring home five runs to take their first lead of the game. Shannon Peterson got the scoring going for AU with a monster two-run home run to make it a one run game. Following a pair of singles, Maggie Dunnett would triple to right-center scoring both runners to take a 6-5 lead. Dunnett would then score on a wild pitch giving AU a 7-5 lead.
Sarah Kennedy would make it a three run lead for Augustana as she led off the sixth with a solo home run, for her eighth home run of the season. Following back-to-back singles that put runners on the corners, AU attempted a double steal and the runner on first was caught in a run down, but Christina Pickett was able to score from third to make it a 9-5 Viking lead.
CSP had a chance to cut into the lead as
Elena Koncar led off the bottom of the sixth with a double but the next three batters would be retired thanks to some solid AU defense.
The long ball kept coming for Augustana in the seventh as Dunnett launched a 2-run shot over the centerfield fence for the team's third home run of game and giving AU an 11-5 advantage.
After a pair of singles by McKenna Giese and Schanks,
Sarah Kivisto would bring both runners home with a two RBI double to cut the AU lead to four runs. Kivisto would advance to third on a wild pitch and end up stranded to end the game as AU came away with the 11-7 win.
Linzy Heim (5-8) took the loss in the circle for Concordia going four and two-thirds innings, allowing 12 hits, seven runs and striking out one.
Maggie Dunnett (2-1) came away with the win after coming in to relieve just one out into the game. Dunnett allowed 7 hits, three runs and striking out three.
Concordia was led by
Haley Schanks,
Sarah Kivisto and
Lily Langevin who all went 2-4 at the plate. Schanks and Kivisto each added two RBI in the loss.
Seven different players finished with two or more hits for the Vikings. Leading the way was Kara McDougall and Samantha Eisenreich who both went 3-4 at the plate. Dunnett led the team with four RBI in game two.
Concordia will take to the road next week for a six game road trip beginning with a double-header against Southwest Minnesota State on Tuesday, April 4. First pitch for game one will be at 2 pm.
