ST. PAUL, Minn. - After a grueling 19-day, seven game road trip through six states, Concordia-St. Paul (7-5) returned home to the friendly confines of the Concordia Dome for an 18-2 win over Midland (4-4) on Saturday.
Concordia improves to 3-2 at home after winning four of the seven road games. The Golden Bears remain home next Friday at 6:30 p.m., hosting Northern Michigan in a return trip game. CSP defeated the Wildcats 14-8 on March 7 on the road.
The Golden Bears built a 4-0 lead in the first five-plus minutes of play with sophomore
Sheala Osborne scoring two of her four goals consecutively for the 4-0 lead. Junior
Kallie LaValle assisted on two of the first three goals, dishing out three in the game and adding a goal for a four point day. It was Osborne's second four goal game and third hat trick of the year. She's scored 14 goals on 18 shots this season.
Following a goal by Midland's Elyse Strebel on a free position shot in the 10th minute, freshman
Kailey Heinl put in back-to-back goals on passes from freshman
Maddie Hentges. The first in the sequence came just 16 seconds after Midland's goal, and the pair hooked up again 19 seconds later to start a 13-0 scoring run.
Heinl scored her fourth five-plus goal game of the year and leads the squad with 39 on the season. Hentges registered a seven point day for the second time, matching the program high while becoming the first Golden Bear to dish four assists in a game. It was also her fourth hat trick of the year and her 38 total points trail only Heinl (42) while her 13 assists match LaValle for the team lead.
Freshmen
Alina Boyce (2g, 1a) and
Riley Burns (1g, 2a) also had three point games for CSP.
Playing with the lead, freshman goalie
Katie Lottsfeldt protected the big advantage by making five first half saves, finishing the game saving six of the eight shots on goal she would face among 13 total shots fired by the Warriors. She also secured the possessions with six ground balls, a game-high total.
Concordia countered Midland's 13 shots by taking 38, putting 31 on goal as Midland goalie Tessa Singleton made 13 saves.
The Golden Bears put together a strong game in the midfield to keep the pressure off the defense and Lottsfeldt by securing a 15-7 advantage in draw controls and holding Midland to 9-14 on clear attempts. Concordia put together 16-18 clears, including 10-11 in the first half to effectively keep the ball in Midland's zone.
Heinl led the team with five draw controls and added a pair of ground balls while Osborne had three draw controls and caused a pair of turnovers. Outside of Lottsfeldt's six ground balls, it was freshman
Tia Zachman who secured three while four others had two ground balls each.
Freshman
Cassidy Leininger and LaValle each joined Osborne with team leading two caused turnovers as CSP held a 21-16 advantage in turnovers.
The 18 goal performance is Concordia's second highest total of the season, with the 16-goal margin also the second most. CSP assisted on 13 of the 18 goals, the second highest assist total.
Midland, receiving votes in the most recent NAIA Top-10 Coaches' Poll, was led by Malia Shimabukuro who had the other Warrior goal while adding team-highs with four ground balls and three draw controls.
