Boyce and Hentges spark offense in well-rounded win

Bears post top all-around victory, excelling in all facets

ST. PAUL, Minn. - Freshmen Alina Boyce and Maddie Hentges each matched program highs with seven points to lead Concordia-St. Paul (8-5) to a 21-6 victory over Northern Michigan (2-6) on Friday night in the 2017 finale at the Concordia Dome.

Concordia has three games left in 2017, heading to Colorado to take on #15 Regis and CSU-Pueblo in two weeks on April 12 & 14 before returning home for the home finale in the first outdoor game at Sea Foam Stadium on April 21 against Indianapolis.

Boyce scored four of Concordia's first six goals as the Golden Bears sprinted out to a 9-0 lead midway through the first half. Hentges, meanwhile, scored four of her five goals in the game in the second half. Boyce added a late first half assist while Hentges had a pair of assists, one in each half.

The duo each scored seven points, a program high achieved four times this year, the other two times both by Hentges. Boyce's six goal game also ties a program high, joining Hentges and freshman Kailey Heinl.

Freshman Riley Burns netted her second five point game, scoring her first hat trick with three goals and adding a pair of assists. Freshman Sidney Schreiner also had a trick off the bench for CSP, the first of her career.

The Golden Bears played arguably their best all-around game tonight committing a season low 11 turnovers while NMU committed 22 (15 caused turnovers by CSP) for a +11 turnover margin. Concordia was also strong on the draw, gaining possession on 19 of the 29 draws in the game.

The result led to a 49-14 overall shot margin with CSP putting a 42 of those on goal compared to NMU's 14 total shots with 11 on goal. CSP's overall and shots on goal marks were both season highs.

Junior Kallie LaValle had a huge all-around night, leading the club with five draw controls and tying for the team high with four ground balls while also contributing four points with a pair of goals and a pair of assists, adding two caused turnovers to her line.

Also adding impact in the midfield, where Concordia was solid in creating a majority of NMU's turnovers all night, was sophomore Sheala Osborne who had three ground balls, three draw controls and a game-high five caused turnovers.

Concordia's first half was impressive, committing just four turnovers while causing 14, adding a 19-10 differential in ground balls with a perfect 10-10 in clears and a 33-8 shot margin. CSP also had just eight fouls while drawing 13, leading to five goals on free position shots on eight attempts. By comparison, NMU was just 5-8 on first half clears and 0-2 on free position shots (0-3 FPS for the game).

The Golden Bears relied on the draw control to keep possession with running time in the second half, winning nine of the 11 draws after the break to keep the score in double-digits the rest of the way.

Freshman goalie Katie Lottsfeldt entered the night with 102 total saves, fifth most in Division II and added five more to her season ledger to improve to 8-5 in the cage. She also secured four ground balls where she ranked 13th in the country with 13.25 per game prior to tonight's game.

Graison Ringlever led NMU with a four point performance including a hat trick with one assist. She also had a pair of ground balls and one of NMU's four caused turnovers. Shelby Klotz added two goals along with three draw controls and two ground balls.

With the win, CSP secures its first season series victory over an opponent, winning 14-8 at NMU on March 7 before tonight's 21-6 victory at the Concordia Dome. The Golden Bears have also secured a winning home record in its inaugural season, improving to 4-2 at the Concordia Dome with one more home game remaining outdoors at Sea Foam Stadium. The team has also secured at least a .500 regular season record with an 8-5 record with three regular season games to play.
