Concordia falls at Tampa despite strong start

Golden Bears jump out to 5-0 lead before dropping Florida finale

TAMPA, Fla. - Concordia-St. Paul (6-5) closed out its first spring break trip to Florida on Saturday afternoon with a 20-7 road loss to the University of Tampa (5-5) on a sunny and "perfect" day at Naimoli Field.

Concordia went 2-2 in its four game tour of the Sunshine State and 4-3 on a seven game road stand. The team returns home to the climate controlled Concordia Dome at Sea Foam Stadium next Saturday with an 11 a.m. game against Midland University (Neb.).

The Golden Bears got off to an incredibly hot start against a fourth year Division II Tampa program that entered play having lost three in a row on its home field - all against Division II competition.

Concordia wasted no time as freshman Kailey Heinl scored on a pass from junior Kallie LaValle on the first possession of the game. It was Heinl's only goal, coming 31 seconds into the game which snapped a streak of four straight hat tricks during which she racked up 18 goals. Heinl has scored a goal in all 11 games this season.

Four minutes later, freshman Alina Boyce scored her first of two goals. Boyce recorded her seventh two-plus goal game of the year and is third on the team with 21 goals.

She was followed in the eighth minute by LaValle, who had her fifth two point performance, scoring a goal and dishing the assist to Heinl. She leads the team with 10 assists.

A few minutes later, freshman Sidney Schreiner scored the first of back-to-back goals, putting a pair in the cage with 18:28 and 13:49 to play in the half. Schreiner registers her second career two goal game and has five on the year.

The strong extended into the second part of the opening half as Concordia stayed in system and the defense only allowed two shots (both wide of net) in the first 17-plus minutes.

Tampa didn't score until the 12:08 mark of the first half and it was a goal that opened up the floodgates for the Spartans, who scored 17 in a row including seven in the final 12:08 of the half to enter halftime with a 7-5 lead and stealing the momentum from the young Golden Bears.

Concordia continued to attempt to work back into the game, as Boyce scored her second goal with 14:46 to play and was followed by freshman Maddie Hentges, who assisted on the Boyce goal.

The back-to-back goals cut the margin to 10, 17-7 with 13:15 to go before Tampa scored three in the last five minutes.

Depsite the double-digit loss, Concordia had more ground balls (21) than the Spartans (18) and committed five fewer fouls (14-19).

The Golden Bears started the game making its first seven clear attempts, all coming in building the 5-0 lead. CSP went into the break converting 11-13 clears while Tampa was an efficient 9-10.

In the second half, CSP was unable to move the ball from one end to the other, converting just 2-6 while Tampa made all six of its clear attempts.

In the net, freshman Katie Lottsfeldt took the loss while making five saves against the Spartans. She also scooped six ground balls and had three caused turnovers.

LaValle added five ground balls, three draw controls and two caused turnovers to her two point scoring line.
