CSP heads to #23 Winona State and Upper Iowa this weekend

Concordia plays final two road games of regular season this weekend

ST. PAUL, Minn. The Golden Bears women's basketball team (17-7, 13-5 NSIC) will play their final two road games of the regular season this upcoming weekend as they travel to Winona State on Friday, Feb. 10. CSP will then travel to Upper Iowa on Saturday, Feb. 11 to wrap up the weekend. Games begin at 6 pm and 4 pm, respectively.
 
CSP extended their winning streak to 10 games after a pair of wins this past weekend. Concordia first defeated St. Cloud State by a score of 88-75 and then followed up with a 70-59 win against Minnesota Duluth.
 
Against SCSU, four players reached double figures for the Golden Bears in the win, but it was Mishayla Jones who really stood out as she recorded her first career triple-double with 15 points, 10 rebounds and 14 assists. Her 14 assists ranks tied for third most in a game.
 
Anna Schmitt and Caitlyn Russell as they finished with 24 and 21 points, respectively. Brianna Miller rounded out the double-digit scorers with a career-high 11 points in 36 minutes of play.
 
The Golden Bears shot the ball extremely well for the game going 30-51 (58.8%) from the field, 12-20 (60%) from 3-point distance which ranks third in program history and 16-21 (76.2%) from the free-throw line.
 
Leading the way for the Huskies was Betsy McDonald with 19 points and five rebounds, followed by Chelsea Nooker with 17 points and five rebounds. Rounding out the double-digit scoring for the Huskies was Amanda Christianson with 12 points and a team-high eight rebounds.
 
Against Minnesota Duluth, the Golden Bears were able to extend their winning streak to 10 games becoming the fourth team in program history since 2009-10 to win 10 or more straight games.
 
The starting five Concordia handled all the scoring and leading the way was Caitlyn Russell who scored a game-high 24 points, pulled in a game-high eight rebounds, and blocked a game-high four shots.
 
Anna Schmitt finished with 19 points and six rebounds for CSP, while Mishayla Jones added 12 points and team-high four assists.
 
Brianna Miller played a very well rounded game as she scored eight points, grabbed seven rebounds, stole two passes, played in all 40 minutes, and held the Bulldogs leading scorer to nine points, four points below her season average. Kayla Miller finished with seven points, while knocking down a pair of triples and stealing two passes.
 
Minnesota Duluth was led by Sammy Kozlowski who scored a team-high 19 points while handing out a game-high six assists. Josie Buckley added 10 points and five rebounds off the bench for UMD. Taylor Meyer scored nine points, all off of 3-pointers, and grabbed seven rebounds.

WSU SERIES HISTORY
Concordia and Winona state will be meeting for the 46th time in program history. CSP owns a 29-16 overall record against the Warriors.
 
LAST MEETING VS WINONA STATE
The Golden Bears and the Warriors met earlier this season inside the Gangelhoff Center and it was CSP who came away with the 66-59 victory. The win snapped Concordia's five game losing streak to WSU.
 
Four players reached double figures as Caitlyn Russell led the way off the bench with 14 points and four rebounds. Anna Schmitt finished with 12 points while Kyrah Fredenburg and Lauren Shifflett scored 11 and 10 points, respectively. Fredenburg also finished with a game-high 14 rebounds.
 
CSP won the rebounding battle by a 44-39 margin and converted on 13 second chance points compared to Winona's eight second chance points.
 
Winona State was led by Liz Evenocheck with a game-high 17 points. Tara Roelofs added 14 points and Hannah McGlone chipped in with 10 points and 10 rebounds.
 
Winona State got off to a quick start as they jumped out to 7-0 lead just over a minute and a half into the contest. The Concordia offense would pick up though as they would go on to outscore the Warriors 20-4 the remainder of the quarter.
 
In the second quarter, CSP continued to build upon their lead that would eventually reach 11 at the 6:39 mark. WSU would cut the lead to six but again the Concordia offense would heat up as they build a 15 point lead at the 3:08 mark off a 9-0 run.
 
In the fourth quarter, Concordia would build their lead to as much as seven and they would never trail at any point in the entire quarter and second half. The Warriors would get as close as one on couple occasions but could never regain the early first quarter lead they had at the beginning of the game.
 
ABOUT THE WARRIORS
WSU comes in ranked 23rd in the latest NCAA Division II polls and they are also tied for first in the NSIC South standings with Sioux Falls.
 
Winona State is led by Tara Roelofs, Jenny Tuttle and Kayla Timmerman as they come in averaging 13.7, 12.3 and 11.0 pointers per game, respectively. Timmerman has also recorded a team-high 46 blocks.
 
Hannah McGlone chips in with 9.7 points per game and a team-leading 8.1 rebounds per game.
 
The Warriors are a very good shooting team as they come in with 46.0% field goal percentage which ranks first in the NSIC. Their 36.5% field goal defense ranks third in the conference.
 
Winona State is 7-3 since the beginning of 2017 and are coming off a 1-1 weekend falling to MSU Moorhead by a score of 66-70 before bouncing back to defeat Northern State 65-53.
 
Kayla Timmerman led the Warriors in scoring with 19 points against MSU Moorhead. Hannah McGlone scored 16 points and grabbed 12 rebounds for her 6th double-double of the season. Tara Roelofs added 11 points.
 
Against Northern State, four Warriors scored in double figures and Hannah McGlone recorded her 7th double-double this season. Tara Roelofs led the scoring with 18 points while making four of seven three-pointers.
 
Jenny Tuttle scored 17 points and was three of six from three-point range. Jenny Weiland was six of seven from the field, with a free throw for 13 points. Hannah McGlone made four of five from the field and grabbed 11 rebounds for a double-double, her second on the weekend.
 
Scouting Upper Iowa (3-19, 3-15 NSIC)
UIU SERIES HISTORY
The Golden Bears meet the Peacocks for the 25th time on Saturday. CSP owns a 21-3 all-time record against Upper Iowa.
 
LAST MEETING VS UPPER IOWA
Leading the way for CSP was Lauren Shifflett with 18 points (4-8 3FG) and three assists. Anna Schmitt finished with 15 points, eight rebounds, and six assists for Concordia. Kyrah Fredenburg, Kayla Miller and Lindsay Dorr all finished with eight points apiece for Concordia.
 
Upper Iowa was led by Blair Klostermann with 16 points and eight rebounds, while Ashley Rosenstiel and Sam Ofstad each added 10 points in the loss.
 
As a team the Golden Bears went 16-17 (94.1%) from the free-throw line which ties for eighth in program history for a single game.
 
With the score tied at 12 with 1:59 left in the first period of play CSP would use an 8-0 run to take 20-12 lead going into the second quarter.
 
In the second quarter, Upper Iowa started to heat up from the floor as they clawed their way back to take a 34-30 lead heading into the locker room. UIU would outscore CSP 22-10 in the second quarter.
 
Coming out of the locker room, both teams traded baskets and runs, but it would be CSP who would hold a slight 50-48 lead heading in the final quarter of play.
 
In the four quarter, neither team could get the scoring going as Concordia held a 10-9 scoring advantage to hold on for the 60-57 win.
 
ABOUT THE PEACOCKS
Upper Iowa currently holds a 3-19 overall record and a 3-15 record in NSIC play. They are currently tied for seventh in the South Division with Southwest Minnesota State.
 
UIU dropped a pair of conference games over the weekend, falling on the road to Northern State by a score of 63-86 and MSU Moorhead by a close score of 66-69.
 
The Peacocks are led by Blair Klostermann who comes in averaging a team-best 18.1 points per game which also ranks first in the NSIC. She has scored 30+ points in two games this year and has reached double-figures in all but four games.
 
Klostermann is shooting 41.1% from the field and 84% from the free-throw line on the year. She ranks second on the team in rebounds per game at 5.4.
 
Carly Pagel ranks second on the team in scoring with 10.1 points per game. Pagel ranks third on the team in rebounds with 4.9 per game.
 
Sam Ofstad comes in third on the team in scoring averaging 8.1 points per game while leading the team in assists at 3.8 per game.
 
Haley Martin provides some solid interior defense as she leads the team in blocks with 21 and rebounds with 5.7 per game.
 
NSIC LEADERS
The Golden Bears have seen several different players shine in different areas this season with four different players registering in as top-10 performers in nine different statistical categories in the conference.
 
Kyrah Fredenburg ranks first in rebounds per game at 10.4 while her 8.3 defensive rebounds per game also ranks first.
 
Anna Schmitt places in three categories as she ranks third in scoring (18.0PPG), sixth in field goal percentage (48.1%), 10th in free-throw percentage (.811) and fourth in minutes played per game (35.1).
 
Caitlyn Russell's 1.8 blocks per game ranks seventh in the conference.
 
Mishayla Jones ranks fifth in steals per game (2.0) and fourth in assists per game (4.5).
 
MILESTONE WATCH
Kyrah Fredenburg currently ranks fourth in program history in defensive rebound average (6.0), fifth in rebound average (8.0), and seventh in defensive rebounds (453).
 
Mishayla Jones is only 11 points away from 1,000 career points. Her 347 career assists currently ranks eighth. She has played 2862 minutes which ranks 10th.
 
Caitlyn Russell currently ranks third in blocked shots average (1.5) and her 115 career blocks currently sits fifth on the list.
 
Anna Schmitt has played an average of 34.4 minutes in her first two seasons which ranks second all-time. Her scoring average of 16.5 points per game ranks fifth and her 3.4 assists ranks ninth.
 
Lauren Shifflett has made her mark on the three-point career records as she currently ranks in the top 10 in two different categories. She ranks seventh in 3-pointers made (137) and 3-pointers attempted (387).
