Missed opportunities haunt Golden Bears at Augustana

Four of Concordia's final six drives result in turnovers in a two score loss

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. - Concordia-St. Paul (1-9 NSIC, 0-6 South) fell short in another comeback bid on Saturday afternoon at Kirkeby-Over Stadium, falling 28-13 to Augustana (4-6 NSIC, 2-4 South) in CSP's final road game of 2017.

The Golden Bears return home next Saturday, November 11 for senior day against Southwest Minnesota State with a 1 p.m. kickoff at Sea Foam Stadium.

From late in the third quarter to the end of the game, Concordia turned the ball over on four of its last six possessions. The Bears also had a pair of missed field goals, one in the first and one in the second quarter. The Golden Bear defense looked to make it up, forcing three turnovers with Augie missing its only field goal attempt of the day.

The two teams combined to score points on three of eight total trips to the red zone, CSP going 1-3 to Augie's 2-5 (all touchdowns).

Freshman defensive end Chris Garrett had his top game in what has been a fantastic rookie season. He had three sacks, forced three fumbles, had 3.5 tackles for loss and a new high of nine tackles in the game. In just six games, Garrett has amassed six sacks, 8.5 tackles for loss, five forced fumbles and 40 tackles.

Another freshman defender also had a strong game as linebacker Blake Evans led the team with 13 tackles and now leads the team with 84 on the season.

Senior quarterback Ron Johnson passed for a career-high 349 yards, his second 300-yard performance as a Golden Bear. He finished the game four completions and two attempts shy of the school single game record, completing 27-54. He threw one touchdown and was intercepted three times with the last two coming at the Augie 4 and 5 yard lines late in the fourth quarter.

Sophomore wide receiver Marcus Gustaveson was the top target, tying his career high with 10 catches for a new career mark of 135 yards. He hauled in the lone touchdown pass for CSP from seven yards out with just over two minutes to play in the game to make it 21-13 Augustana.

While the Golden Bears weren't able to stop the Vikings on the ensuing drive after the Gustaveson touchdown, the Vikings scored with 54 seconds to play to give Concordia another possession.

Johnson was able to find three different targets on the final drive, Gabe Steed for eight yards before two 19 yard connections to Jake Tanner and Deceon Schumann to the Augie 29 yard line. The Vikings picked up their last interception on a 25 yard pass downfield with just seconds remaining.

Concordia's scoring started in the second quarter when junior Jonas Schenderlein made his second longest field goal, a 55 yarder with 6:18 to play before the break to cut Augie's lead to 7-3. He also converted from 42 yards out five minutes into the third quarter to make it a one point game, 7-6.

Schenderlein's two field goal game moved him into second on the career list with 26 (39 attempts), surpassing Brody Johnson (25-49, 2003-06). He sits 18 behind Tom Obarski (44-63, 2011-14) for the career record with Obarski making a school record 18 during his senior campaign in 2014. Schenderlein's 15 field goals made in 2017 are the second most in program history, as well.

Senior Sam Maedke continued his best season as CSP's punter, as he produced the second best single game average in school history at 48.7 on six punts. He had a long of 56 as well as a 55 yard punt on a day with three punts of 50-plus yards, adding two inside the 20 for a net punting average of 45.0.

Concordia put up 381 yards of offense, but couldn't establish the run with 21 attempts for 32 yards. Johnson led the ground game with nine attempts for 12 yards while the Florida backfield of Darnell Rolle, Shaq Johnson and Lajuan Preston combined for 12 attempts and 20 yards.

While Gustaveson topped 100 yards for the fourth time in his career and second time this season, Johnson was able to spread the ball around to Schumman (5-55), Tanner (2-54) and Elias Arlington (4-66) each for 50-plus yard days as well. Arlington also had 65 yards on three kickoff returns with a long of 33 to finish with 131 all-purpose yards.

In all, Johnson connected with eight different targets with multiple completions to six players.

Augustana's offense was led by Kyle Saddler, completing 24-40 for 302 yards and three touchdowns although he was sacked four times and intercepted once. He found Jake Welsheimer eight times for 111 yards and two touchdowns and Trevor DeSchepper six times for 90 yards and a touchdown.
