Hot shooting from #10 MTU too much for Golden Bears

Schmitt scored a career-high 33 points, shooting 66.6% from the field and 100% from three

ST. PAUL, Minn. - The Golden Bear women's basketball team (2-3) dropped their final game of the Radisson Hotel Classic 83-76 to the #10 Michigan Tech Huskies (6-1) on Saturday evening at the Gangelhoff Center.

Concordia is now 3-7 in their all-time series history with the Huskies, with their last win in the 2015 season, when the Bears won 86-77. CSP finished the tournament going 1-1, with a victory in Friday's contest against the Lake Superior State Lakers.

Junior guard Anna Schmitt wrapped up a great tournament performance, once again leading the Bears in scoring, with a career-high 33 points. Schmitt hit 14-21 shots from the floor (66.7%) and nailed all four of her three-point attempts while also adding four rebounds and three assists. Junior Lindsay Dorr also contributed with 13 points and freshman Ellie Gess chipped in ten. Dorr led the rebounding efforts, nabbing eight boards, three of which were offensive.

The Huskies wasted no time, starting the game with an 8-1 lead after the first two minutes of play. The Bears worked for the next six minutes to cut down the lead and eventually tied it with two minutes left in the first quarter. Each team added a few more points to end the first quarter with a score of 17-15 in favor of Michigan Tech.

In the second quarter, Schmitt got hot for the Bears, scoring 12 points, going a perfect 5-5 from the floor and 2-2 from three. The Bears outscored the Huskies in this quarter 20-14 to take a 35-31 lead into the halftime break.

Scoring went back and forth for most of the third quarter. However, the Huskies went on a seven point run at the end of the session to take a nine point lead heading into the final ten minutes. The Huskies outscored the Bears 28-15 throughout the quarter to lead 59-50.

To open the fourth quarter, the Huskies hit a three, stretching their lead to twelve. Michigan Tech then went on an 8-2 run to put them up by 18 with six minutes left in the game. The Bears answered back scoring the next eight points to cut the lead to 11. Late in the quarter the Bears were able to come within six, but the comeback ran out of time and the Huskies held on for an 83-76 victory.

Michigan Tech was led by Kelli Guy, who scored 24 points, hitting six threes and knocking down eight shots from the field. Other top scorers for the Huskies included Lindsay Winter, with 18, and Brenna Heise, with 17. On Friday, Heise broke the tournament record for most points scored in a single game (37) and with Saturday's efforts tied the tournament record for most points in the combined games (54).

The Huskies shot an impressive 54.2% from the floor and 62.5% from three, hitting ten three-pointers throughout the contest. The Bears were held to smaller percentages, shooting 49.2% from the floor and 46.2% from behind the arc. CSP did, however, connect on more free-throws, shooting 75.0% from the line compared to the 64.3% free-throw percentage held by the Huskies.

Throughout the game the Huskies really capitalized on CSP's 14 turnovers, scoring 25 points from these chances, compared to the Bears' 16 points off turnovers. The Bears, though, held a 34-29 rebounding edge and took advantage of their second chances, holding a 18-7 edge in second chance points.

The Bears continue their six game homestand with an exhibition game against Augsburg on Tuesday, November 28th at 7 p.m. before opening conference play at home on Saturday, December 1st against Augustana at 6 p.m. After taking on Augustana, CSP will close out their homestand, playing Wayne State the following day, with tip-off scheduled for 4 p.m.
