CSP capitalizes on turnovers for exhibition win

The Bears scored 21 points off turnovers, forcing 19 throughout the game

ST. PAUL, Minn. – The Concordia-St. Paul women's basketball team (2-3) won 74-61 in their final tune-up before conference play in an exhibition game against the Augsburg Auggies (3-2). The Bears will take on Augustana (5-0, 1-0 NSIC) and Wayne State (6-3, 0-1 NSIC) this weekend to open NSIC play.

The Auggies got on the board first, but 2-0 was the only lead they would have throughout the night, as the Bears took over from there. The Bears were up by two with about four minutes left in the first quarter before going on an 8-3 run to close out the first quarter, leading Augsburg 18-11 after the first ten minutes.

The Bears scored the first five points of the second quarter to extend their lead to 12 and kept adding until they were up by 18 with 2:30 left in the half. The Auggies answered scoring back-to-back threes to end the half, including one right at the buzzer from sophomore forward Abby Jordan. The Bears entered the break with a 12 point lead.

CSP came swinging out of the gate to start the second half as they immediately went on a 10-1 run to lead by a game-high 21 points. The Auggies were able to cut that lead to 11 by the end of the quarter as they shot 41.7% from the floor and 66.7% from three during this quarter.

Augsburg continued to shoot well from the floor in the fourth quarter and got the game to within eight points at two different times in the quarter, but could not manage to catch the Golden Bears who shot a game-best 57.1% from the floor and 66.7% from three in the final quarter.

The Bears had many offensive threats throughout the night, as 11 out of 12 CSP players scored. Anna Schmitt led the way with 17, but senior Hadyn Becker and junior Kayla Miller each added 12 points of their own. Freshman Sydney Weierke led the Bears in rebounding, grabbing seven throughout the contest.

Concordia held the shooting advantage in field-goal percentage, shooting 42.2% from the floor compared to their opponent's 29.3%, but Augsburg posted better three-point and free-throw line percentages. CSP made up for this deficit by taking advantage of Augburg's 19 turnovers, scoring 21 points from these mistakes.

The Bears will play next on Friday, December 1st as they host Augustana for their first conference game of the season. The following day, CSP will face Wayne State to close out their six-game homestand. Game time on Friday is set for 6:00 p.m. and tip-off on Saturday will be at 4:00 p.m. If you are unable to make it to the Gangelhoff Center, follow along online at cspbears.com/watch.
