ST. LOUIS, Mo. – The Concordia-St. Paul soccer team (0-2) dropped their second game of the season, 2-0 to Maryville (1-0) on Saturday afternoon in St. Louis.
After a scoreless first half and not many shots on goal, Maryville's Allison Verville notched the first goal of the game as she put the ball into the upper left corner of the net, off a free kick, giving the Saints a 1-0 lead at the 59th minute of the game.
Maryville then added to their lead seven minutes later as Rachel Wiesehan found the back of the net off a corner kick building a two goal lead over the Golden Bears. Concordia had multiple scoring chances as they outshot the Saints 6-3, but could not find the back of the net.
"I feel we dominated for long periods of the game but failed to take our chances. Giving up both goals on set plays is very disappointing. It was a good weekend for us to learn more about our team and how we approach the NSIC season." Head coach
Steve Bellis had to say following the game.
The first half was a defensive battle as neither team was able to get much going on the offensive side of the field. The Golden Bears were able to get three shots, one on goal, in the first 45 minutes of play and their defense only allowed one shot in the first half that was saved by
Emily Nelson.
Nelson who made her second start of the season between the pipes but only played the first half against the Saints. Freshman
Jordyn Clark played the second half and took a tough luck loss in goal for the Golden Bears in her debut. Madison Buelow played the second half for Maryville while making one save and coming away with the win.
Sophomore Brooke Salo was active on the offensive end coming away with a game-high two shots.
Chelsie Lindsay,
Colette Piche,
Jordan Rowan-Stafford and
Tori Lust all registered one shot for the Golden Bears.
Concordia nearly had a chance to take the lead early in the second half, but Salo's shot at the 51st minute sailed just wide of the net. The Golden Bears did not get another shot off until Maryville built a two goal lead. They did have a couple opportunities late in the game but CSP came up empty.
Concordia will look to get its first win of the season next Sunday, Sept. 11, as they travel down to La Crosse, Wis. to take on Viterbo at 4 pm in their final non-conference matchup of the season.
