Golden Bears drop final non-conference matchup to Viterbo

CSP falls to Viterbo on the road

LA CROSSE, Wis. – The Concordia-St. Paul soccer team (0-3) fell in its final non-conference game of the season on the road to Viterbo (3-4) by a score of 3-1 on a sunny, crisp early fall Sunday afternoon.

The Golden Bears got off to a slow start and Viterbo took advantage as they jumped out to an early 1-0 lead only two minutes and 18 seconds into the game after Nicole D'Ambrose got behind the Concordia defense and found the back of the net.

The V-Hawks added their second goal of the game just under six minutes later as Sienna Fraser put the ball in the upper corner of the goal, netting her first goal of the game and building a two goal lead. Fraser would score her second goal of the game at the 21st minute giving Viterbo a 3-0 halftime lead.

"We showed our inexperience in the first 25 minutes of the game, we gave them multiple opportunities early on. Viterbo is a good team and they took advantages of those opportunities," head coach Steve Bellis said following the loss.

Concordia only managed to get off three shots in the first half compared to the V-Hawks who took eight shots in the first 45 minutes of play. Freshman goalkeeper Jordyn Clark made her first collegiate start and tallied three saves in the first half.

Coming out in the second half, Concordia picked up the intensity on the offensive side of the field outshooting the V-Hawks 5-1. Sophomore forward Jordan Rowan-Stafford would score the Golden Bears lone goal with three seconds remaining in the game.

Rowan-Stafford led the way with three shots for Concordia, all of which came in the second half. Freshman defender Hannah Pavek and senior forward Chelsie Lindsay also added two shots a piece on the afternoon.

The Golden Bears open up NSIC play on Friday, Sept. 16 as they play host to Minnesota Duluth at 7 p.m. at Sea Foam Stadium.
