CROOKSTON, Minn. - The Concordia University soccer team (1-4-3, 1-1-3 NSIC) opened up their weekend road trip with a 0-0 tie at Minnesota Crookston (2-6-1, 1-4-1 NSIC) on Saturday afternoon. Concordia has now come away with a tie in three of their last five games.
"We showed a defensive steel that so often was the catalyst for our offensive breaks. Sadly we failed to capitalize on the multiple opportunities we had. We hope that eventually we will start to get the lucky bounces that are going the other way right now." Head coach
Steve Bellis said following the game.
The Golden Bears put pressure on the Golden Eagles during the game but were unable to beat UMC keeper Lexie Gauger who made five saves and while picking up her third shutout on the season. CSP out-shot UMC 11-8 overall and 5-2 on shots on goal and maintained ball control on their attacking end for much of the game.
Senior forward
Chelsie Lindsay and sophomore forward
Jordan Rowan-Stafford led the Golden Bears with four shots a piece on the afternoon. Three of Lindsay's four shots were on goal and only one of Rowan-Stafford's shots was on goal.
Erica Landry,
Hannah Pavek and
Brooke Salo each registered one shot in the game for CSP.
Concordia keeper
Emily Nelson wasn't challenged often on the afternoon but was up to the test as she made two saves and picked up her first shutout of the year.
The Golden Bears got off to a fast start offensively as they fired three shots in the first 10 minutes of the game. Minnesota Crookston did attempt their first shot until the 12:49 mark in the first half. Concordia probably had their best chance of scoring as they were able to attempt five shots over a two minute stretch late in the first half.
In the second half the tides turned and the shot chart favored the Golden Eagles as they out-shot CSP 4-1 in the final 45 minutes of regulation. UMC's pressure came early as they attempted two shots just over a minute apart, five minutes into the second half of play both of which came from Abi Aswege who led UMC with three shots for the game.
The first overtime session only had one shot attempt and that went to Rowan-Stafford who sailed the shot over the crossbar. In the second overtime, CSP had a chance to end the game and come away three points as Rowan-Stafford would attempt her fourth and final shot of the game, but it was saved by Gauger. UMC would also have a chance to end the game, but their lone shot attempt in overtime by Hannah Riveland sailed just wide.
The Golden Bears will look to finish the weekend in the win column on Sunday as they travel to Bemidji State for a 1 p.m. game.
