Balanced effort leads Golden Bears to sweep at Bemidji State

CSP moves to 13-0 with their 11th sweep on the year

BEMIDJI, Minn. – The #1 Concordia-St. Paul volleyball team (13-0, 5-0 NSIC) picked up their 11th sweep of the season as they kept their perfect record following a 3-0 win at Bemidji State (5-8, 1-4 NSIC) on Saturday afternoon.

The Golden Bear winning streak to open the season reached a baker's dozen as CSP picked up their 30th win in 39 meetings all-time against the Beavers. The win also pushed Concordia to a perfect 28-0 since 2002 against BSU and 12-2 in 14 trips to Bemidji.

CSP dominated nearly across the board as they held a 44-23 edge in kills, a 40-21 edge in assists, a 9-4 edge in service aces, a 38-30 edge in digs as well as a .271-.043 advantage in hitting percentage.

Concordia mixed things up on Saturday as they rotated setters for the first time all season as Elizabeth Mohr set new career-highs with 21 assists and 10 digs for her first career double-double while Kasey Williams chipped in 13 assists to go along with a pair of digs.

The leading beneficiary was Anna Schlaak as she hit double figures in kills for the sixth time this season with 12 kills and a .440 hitting percentage to lead all players. She also added five digs and four service aces in a full line.

Anna Pioske was next up with nine kills on 21 swings as Riley Hanson contributed eight kills while Brooklyn Lewis added seven more.

Despite failing to reach double-digit digs for the first time this season, Emily McDonough still finished with nine digs as well as a pair of assists.

Offense was hard to come by for the Beavers as no player finished with more than six kills in the loss. Jessica Reega, Jessica Yost and Amanda Tronick all hit the six kill mark on the day.

After the two teams traded point early in the first, CSP began to pull away midway through the set. The Golden Bear lead hit five at 10-5 before growing to as many as eight at 15-7. From there the Beavers started to chip away and eventually cut it to just three at 20-17, but Concordia stopped the run with five straight points to close out the first set 25-17.

The Beavers jumped out to an early 4-2 lead in the second set, but the Golden Bears quickly shifted play in their favor with seven in a row to build a 9-4 lead of their own. Concordia continued to maintain a comfortable advantage throughout the middle of the set before BSU battled back again. After CSP took their largest lead of the set at 17-10, Bemidji State closed the gap to 2 with a 5-0 run. That run ended up not being enough as the Beavers were unable to pull any closer before Concordia took the set 25-19 to take a 2-0 lead in the match.

Concordia struggled to gain much breathing room to open the third set as Bemidji State remained within two at 8-6 before a 10-2 run pushed the lead to double figures. The Beavers took the next four points in a row to bring it back to six, but CSP regained control to take the third and final set 25-15.

The Golden Bears return home next weekend for a huge series as they host #2 Minnesota Duluth for Roast the Dogs on Friday before taking on St. Cloud State on Saturday as a part of homecoming.
