Golden Bears tie St. Cloud State in a very exciting game

CSP comes away with their second straight of the season

ST. PAUL, Minn. – The Concordia-St. Paul soccer team (0-3-2, 0-2-2 NSIC) tied St. Cloud State (2-2-2, 1-0-2) by a score of 3-3 in Sunday's NSIC matchup at Sea Foam Stadium.

CSP's character was greatly put the test Sunday afternoon, having to come from behind three times against a very solid St. Cloud State team who was coming off a very impressive win over powerhouse Mankato State.

"I said to the team to the team before the game, this could be a very good advertisement for NSIC soccer and it was that. Both teams played very good soccer and it was very well organized. We will take a lot of positives from it and overall it was a great game and our players enjoyed it." Head coach Steve Bellis said following the game.

St. Cloud State broke the scoreless game at the 23:50 mark in the first half when Maria Kass found Hannah Marion on the right side of the box and Marion put the ball into the lower left corner of the net, just out of the reach of goalkeeper Jordyn Clark to give the Huskies a 1-0 lead.

The Huskies would take that 1-0 into the half as they outshot the Golden Bears 7-3 in the first 45 minutes of play.

Concordia picked up the intensity in the second half needing only four minutes to tie the game. Jade Weller would lob a beautiful pass to the far side of the six yard box where Katri Gifford would get a head on the ball, the ball would hit left post and then the right post before finally crossing the goal line for the tying goal.

The Golden Bears would continue to bring pressure but the Huskies would use a counter attack as Kate Fearing would send a long pass from near midfield to Maria Kass who would one touch it past Clark giving St. Cloud State a 2-1 lead with 25 minute remaining in regulation.

With 15 minutes remaining in the game and the Golden Bears trailing by one, Erica Landry dribbled the ball into the right side of the box and sent a nice cross in front of the goal where Katri Gifford one touched it into the back of the net for her second goal of the game and tying the game at two.

Just over 30 seconds later, St. Cloud State would regain their lead after as Maria Kass would follow up on a rebound for her second goal of the game giving the Huskies a 3-2 lead with just over 15 minutes remaining in the game.

After two goals scored in a 33 second spread, Jordan Rowan-Stafford would get fouled inside the penalty box 16 seconds later setting up a penalty kick and chance to tie the game yet again. Chelsie Lindsay would be selected to take the penalty kick for CSP and she would put the ball into the lower right corner of the net, tying the game 3-3. The game would head to overtime after neither team could score the game winning goal in regulation.

In overtime, it was a defensive battle as both team's shots were limited in the extra 20 minutes of play. Jordyn Clark made a huge point blank save in overtime to prevent the Huskies from coming away with the win. In the end, the game would end in a tie after a very exciting and entertaining NSIC game.

Concordia will now take to the road as they travel to Southwest Minnesota State on Friday, September 23rd. Game starts at 4 pm.
