ST. PAUL, Minn. – The Golden Bears soccer team (0-3-1, 0-0-1 NSIC) came away with a 1-1 tie against the Bulldogs of Minnesota Duluth (2-1-2, 0-0-2 NSIC) in Friday night's rainy NSIC matchup and home opener.
With under one minute remaining in regulation,
Jade Weller lined up for a free kick from about 40 yards away. She put the ball into the middle of the box where Collette Piche redirected the kick to the right side of the box to
Mary Kaiser who put the ball into the lower left corner of the goal from 10 yards out to tie the game 1-1 with 40 seconds remaining in regulation and forcing overtime.
In overtime it was all defense both ways on the field as neither team was able to attempt a shot on goal in the 20 minutes of extra time.
The Golden Bears nearly jumped out to a 1-0 lead early in the first half when freshman forward
Hannah Pavek lobbed a shot over the Duluth goalkeeper, but she was flagged for off sides thus eliminating the goal.
It was evenly matched first 25 minutes of the game with both teams getting opportunities to break the 0-0 tie, but at the 28:22 mark Minnesota Duluth's Anna Morrison launched a corner kick into the middle of the box and after a mad scramble for the ball, Emily Fleissner kicked the loose ball into the lower right corner of the net giving the Bulldog's a 1-0 first half lead.
Concordia picked up the intensity and almost scored the equalizer off a corner kick when
Jade Weller came flying into the middle of the box and just kicked the ball over the cross bar, five minutes into the second half.
Midway through the second half, the Bulldogs had a chance to add to their lead as Taylor Johnson was granted a penalty kick after being fouled inside the box, which she sailed over the crossbar keeping their lead at only one.
Emily Nelson got the start in goal for CSP and came away with three saves in 71 minutes of play. Nelson was forced to leave the game, following a 30 minute lightning delay, after getting injured prior to the delay. Freshman goalkeeper
Jordyn Clark came in for Nelson and made two saves while not allowing a single goal to help the Golden Bears come away with the tie.
Concordia returns to action at home on Sunday afternoon at 1 pm as they take on St. Cloud State at Sea Foam Stadium.
