ST. JOSEPH, Mo. – The Concordia-St. Paul softball team (6-12) fell to 0-4 in the Apple Market Classic after dropping games to #19 Northwest Missouri State and Washburn by scores of 11-3 on Saturday.
#19 Northwest Missouri State 11, Concordia-St. Paul 3 (5 inn.)The Golden Bears were unable to overcome an early deficit after the Bearcats hung three runs on the board in each of the first three innings as they fell in five innings.
Nicole Thompson put CSP on the board with an RBI triple in the fourth and
Justine Schattner added a sacrifice fly before
Kelly McKenzie went deep for her second homer of the year, but it was too little too late.
Northwest Missouri State got contributions from their entire lineup as all nine starters registered hits and five different players drove in runs in the win. Rebecca Maher's two-run double put the Bearcats on the board in the first while Kiana Baderdeen delivered a three-run home run in the third to wrap up the nine-run burst through three.
Concordia was held to just four hits in the game as
Carlie Hart and
Jamie Fleischhacker each added singles to round out the offense for CSP.
Linzy Heim (4-4) took the loss in the circle as she worked the first three innings before
Haley Schanks came in to work the fourth.
Kendle Schieber (10-3) was the winner for the Bearcats as she struck out one and walked none in the complete game.
Washburn 11, Concordia-St. Paul 3The Golden Bears jumped out to an early 3-0 lead against the Ichabods, but were unable to close out the win as Washburn scored the final 11 runs of the game.
After CSP starter
Haley Schanks stranded two runners on in the top of the first, Concordia got things going at the plate.
Kelly McKenzie drew a leadoff walk and stole second before coming home on an RBI triple off the bat of
Justine Schattner. Schattner later came around to score on a successful bunt single for
Jamie Fleischhacker before
Sarah Kivisto singled home
Elena Koncar, who reached on a walk, to extend it to 3-0.
The Ichabods started chipping away in the second inning as they got a run on a bases loaded walk before adding another on a run-scoring single in the third. Sierra Kemp tied it up in the fourth with an RBI double, chasing Schanks from the game, before the go-ahead run came in on an error later in the inning.
Washburn added a pair of insurance runs on a Cassidy Merriman homer in the fifth before they put the game away with five more runs in the seventh.
Justine Schattner provided a bright spot for the Golden Bears as she finished the game a homer shy of the cycle while
Jamie Fleischhacker also added a pair of hits.
Concordia will look to turn their fortunes around in the final day of competition in Missouri tomorrow as they take on Central Missouri and Missouri Southern.
