ST. PAUL, Minn. – The Concordia-St. Paul softball team (1-4) is back in action this week as they travel north for the Kelly Laas Memorial Tournament on the campus of St. Cloud State for five games from Thursday to Saturday.
The Golden Bears had last weekend off after opening their season the previous weekend at the Desert Stinger Tournament in Las Vegas.
Freshman shortstop
Justine Schattner made a major impact in her collegiate debut as she hit .533 with a pair of home runs and eight RBI in her first 15 career at-bats to earn All-Tournament Team honors.
Elena Koncar,
Nicole Thompson and
Carlie Hart also put up strong performances in the opening weekend as they collected five hits apiece as the Golden Bears flashed some offensive potential with a .289 batting average and a .376 on-base percentage over the first five games.
In the Kelly Laas Memorial Tournament, the slate for the Golden Bears over the weekend features five opponents from the MIAA as CSP takes on Fort Hays State and Central Missouri on Thursday night, Nebraska Kearney on Friday morning, and Emporia State and Missouri Western State on Saturday night.
Thursday's matchup with Fort Hays State marks just the second meeting between the two schools as Concordia took a 9-2 loss in the first meeting last year. CSP has gone 1-6 against Central Missouri as they dropped a tight 8-7 game last year in St. Cloud.
On Friday, the Golden Bears take on Nebraska Kearney for the seventh time in the all-time series as the two teams split the series with three wins apiece. CSP met UNK two weeks ago in the finale of the Desert Stinger as the Lopers claimed a dramatic 11-10 win.
CSP enters Saturday with a 4-9 record against Emporia State, including dropping both meeting last season, as well as an 8-11 record against Missouri Western State, also taking two losses last year.
