ST. PAUL, Minn. - Concordia-St. Paul (2-8 NSIC, 0-6 South) produced 487 yards of total offense on a school record 93 plays, running up season-highs of 29 first downs for 41:09 of time of possession but couldn't keep pace with the high-flying Augustana (7-3 NSIC, 4-2 South) offense in a 63-31 loss on senior day at Sea Foam Stadium.
The Golden Bears close out the 2016 campaign next Saturday at Winona State with a noon kickoff at Maxwell Field.
Concordia passed for a season-high 380 yards on the day, the team's second 300-yard passing performance of the season leading the team's third most points in a game this season. The Golden Bears also didn't turn the ball over in the game, the third time this year they didn't commit a turnover and sixth time they've either tied or won the turnover battle.
But Augustana was efficient with big plays, scoring from 25-plus yards on five of their nine touchdowns with four of their scoring drives comprised of either one or two plays, their longest scoring drive of the day lasting just 2:37.
Junior quarterback
Ron Johnson completed 30-48 for 334 yards and two touchdowns and added a rushing touchdown on the day. He now has 14 passing and six rushing scores on the season and just eclipsed the 2,000 yard mark on the season with today's effort. Sophomore
Trevor Tillett added 2-6 passing for 46 yards in the fourth quarter.
Johnson was just one complete pass away from tying the single-game record for completions, matching James Peterson's 30 last accomplished in 2012 against U-Mary.
Johnson and Tillett connected with freshman
Marcus Gustaveson for career-highs of 10 catches for 129 yards, coming just two catches shy of the single game receptions record (12, Joe Mapson vs UM-Morris, 2000). Gustaveson hauled in a touchdown for the first points on either side with under a minute to play in the first half, cutting Augie's early lead to 21-10. The Vikings responded with a 41-yard touchdown on a two play scoring drive before halftime for a 28-10 lead at the break.
Gustaveson now has a team-high 538 receiving yards and five touchdowns on 39 catches.
Sophomore
Alquawn Vickers had his top performance of the season as a receiver, hauling in seven catches for 79 yards including a long of 30.
The Vikings did a majority of their damage through quarterback Trey Heid who completed 18-29 for 374 yards and five touchdowns and added three rushing touchdowns as he ran for 37 yards on five attempts. He found Matt Heller eight times for 250 yards and three touchdowns.
While Augie passed for 393 yards as a team, the Vikings also were able to rush for 209 yards on 20 attempts, averaging 10.4 per carry and finished with 602 yards of total offense on 53 plays.
Concordia topped the 100-yard mark rushing led by senior
Darius Chapes with 16 carries for 77 yards (4.8) while adding four catches for 49 yards for 126 combined yards. Senior
Alex Carr also rushed three times for 25 yards (8.3) and had a five yard catch.
Chapes leads the team with 843 all-purpose yards on the year with 653 on the ground and 190 through the air and is 157 combined yards from a 1,000 yard all-purpose season despite missing a contest earlier in the year due to injury.
One of the strengths of Concordia's offense on the season has been red zone efficiency, leading the NSIC and ranking 11th in Division II entering the game with a 90.5 percent scoring rate in 21 trips, averaging 6.0 points per trip to the red zone. The Golden Bears were perfect in five red zone trips today, scoring four touchdowns with one field goal.
The defense was led by senior safety
Dominic Nabak with 11 tackles as he takes over the team lead in tackles with 64. Freshman safety
Brian Lanier added six stops and a pass breakup.
Concordia wasn't able to record a sack or tackle for loss in the game while Augustana was in CSP's backfield for six TFL's and five sacks, although Concordia had five hurries to Augustana's one.
On special teams, all five of
Peter Farris' kickoffs were touchbacks and
Jonas Schenderlein converted a 43 yard field goal in the first quarter to make it a 7-3 game. He made all four of his PAT's and is 28-of-28 on the year in extra points and 7-9 on field goals including 4-4 in the 40-49 yard range. He leads the team with 49 points.
