MARQUETTE, Mich. – The Concordia women's basketball team (2-1) topped Northern Michigan (2-1) on the road Friday evening by a score of 68-61 in the non-conference matchup.
Lindsay Dorr led the way for CSP with a career-high 24 points on 12-21 shooting from the floor while adding seven rebounds in the win.
Anna Schmitt added 18 points, nine rebounds and three assists for CSP.
Hanna Vidlund rounded out the double-digit scorers for CSP as she finished with 12 points while going 4-4 from three-point range.
Mishayla Jones tied a career-high with nine assists and
Kyrah Fredenburg finished with a game-high 11 rebounds, which is her second consecutive double-digit rebound game.
"Our team goal coming into the game was to keep them under 62 points and out rebound them. I told the girls if we could accomplish both of those goals we would win the game and we did. So many different players stepped up again, I couldn't be more proud of their effort and our teamwork tonight. We will continue to be an unselfish basketball team," head coach
Amanda Johnson said following the win.
CSP got off to a cold shooting start to begin the game as they shot 20 percent (4-20) from the field in the first quarter. The Golden Bears did outrebound the Wildcats 13-12 in the first quarter including six offensive rebounds.
Caitlyn Russell tallied four points in the first 10 minutes of play.
Coming out in the second quarter,
Lindsay Dorr would tie the game at 12 just under a minute into the quarter as she scored four consecutive points. Northern Michigan would then respond by outscoring CSP 9-2 over the next four minutes to take a 21-14 lead at the media timeout with 5:14 remaining in the first half.
Following the media timeout, Concordia would outscore NMU 15-4 the remainder of the quarter which included an 8-2 run in the final two minutes of the half. Dorr and
Hanna Vidlund combined to score 10 of the 15 points to close the half. Vidlund drained a pair of three-pointers in the final 1:31 of the second quarter which included a buzzer beating three-pointer to give the Golden Bears a 29-25 halftime lead.
Leading the way for CSP at the half was Dorr off the bench with 10 points, eight of which came in the second quarter. Vidlund and
Anna Schmitt each added six first half points.
Mishayla Jones dished out six first half assists.
The Golden Bears continued to control the glass in the first half as they outrebounded the Wildcats 21-19 including eight offensive rebounds to NMU's two offensive rebounds. Concordia's bench also outscored Northern Michigan's bench 18-7 in the first 20 minutes of play.
Coming out of the intermission CSP would build their lead to as much as five, but then the Wildcats would respond with an 8-0 run over the next 1:23 to take a 34-31 lead and forcing Concordia to take a timeout.
Out of the timeout, Dorr would make a jumper to pull within one and after a turnover by NMU,
Kayla Miller would drill a three-pointer to give the Golden Bears a 36-34 lead with 7:10 left in the third quarter. Those two baskets by Dorr and Miller would trigger a 13-2 run for CSP over the next three and a half minutes forcing Northern Michigan to call a timeout.
The Golden Bears would sink three three-pointers during the run, including a pair of three-pointers by Schmitt. Following the NMU timeout, another layup by Dorr would give CSP their first double-digit lead of the game, but after a pair of free throws and three-pointer by Chloe Tompkins, the Wildcats would cut the Concordia lead to five forcing CSP to call another timeout.
Following the timeout the Wildcats would cut the Concordia lead to two with 1:46 left in the first half, but again it was Vidlund who would drill her third three-pointer of the game to give CSP a 49-44 lead at the end of the third quarter.
At the start of the fourth quarter, NMU would cut the CSP lead down to three but after a pair of free throws by Schmitt, Vidlund would hit her fourth three of the game to give Concordia an eight point lead with 7:55 left in the game.
Following three-pointer by Vidlund, Dorr would score eight of the next 10 points by CSP building their lead back to 10 with 3:12 left in the game.
NMU would continue to fight back would get as close as five with under a minute remaining but with little time left, the Wildcats were forced to foul sending Schmitt to the free throw line. She would make both free throws to seal the victory for the Golden Bears to give them a 68-61 win.
CSP would finish the game with a 40-31 rebounding advantage. They also went 8-18 from downtown while NMU was only able to go 3-12 from beyond the arc. The Wildcats held a wide free throw advantage going 20-29 from the charity stripe. The Concordia bench would also outscore the NMU bench 38-20 on the night.
Northern Michigan was led by Darby Youngstrom and Erin Honkala who each scored 14 points. Honkala also added eight rebounds on the night. Jessica Schultz finished with 10 points for the Wildcats.
CSP returns to action tomorrow as they travel to Michigan Tech for a 3 pm start time.
