HOUGHTON, Mich. – The Concordia women's basketball team (2-2) dropped their final non-conference road match of the season at Michigan Tech (3-0) Saturday afternoon by a score of 76-62.
Anna Schmitt led CSP with 23 points on 10-15 shooting from the floor while also adding three assists.
Lindsay Dorr added 14 points and two rebounds off the bench for the Golden Bears.
Caitlyn Russell tallied eight points while Kryah Fredenburg notched seven points and a season-high 18 rebounds, which ranks fourth all-time in program history for a single game.
Kayla Miller and
Mishayla Jones each added five points on the afternoon for CSP.
Concordia got off to a quick start against the Huskies thanks to the offensive play of Schmitt and Jones. The two guards combined for 14 of the teams 20 first quarter points which helped them take a 20-17 lead heading into quarter number two. CSP only trailed three times in the first quarter and playing from behind never lasted longer than 22 seconds.
In the second quarter, the Golden Bears would build their lead to as much as seven just over a minute into the quarter. Michigan Tech would not go away though as Brenna Heise would score nine of her 19 points in the second quarter helping MTU stay close and eventually tying the game at 31 with 3:42 left in the first half.
CSP would regain the lead a minute later as they would take a 35-33 lead heading into the locker room. Schmitt finished the first half with 15 points, Dorr added seven points and Russell tallied six first half points to lead the Golden Bears.
Heise would lead MTU with 11 first half points while Morgan Anderson added 10 points in the first 20 minutes of play for the Huskies.
Coming out of the locker room both teams would trade the lead multiple times in the first two and a half minutes of the third quarter, however the final seven minutes of the quarter Michigan Tech would outscore CSP 17-4 to build a 12 point lead heading into the final quarter of play.
Anderson and Heise combined to score 12 of the team's 17 points during the run which included a pair of three-pointers by Anderson.
Heading into the final quarter of play, Concordia would start the quarter with a 7-0 run to pull within five points with 7:03 left to play in the game. Miller would trigger the run as she opened the quarter with a three-pointer and then followed with a layup two possessions later.
Once CSP pulled within five, the Huskies mounted a run of their own as they outscored the Golden Bears 11-3 over the next three and a half minutes to give them a 13 point lead which would be their biggest lead of the game at the time.
After MTU pulled away it would be too much for Concordia as they would not get closer than nine the rest of the game. The Huskies would go 7-8 from the free throw line in the final 1:29 of the game helping them come away with the 76-62 win.
Michigan Tech did hold a 13-4 points off turnovers advantage and only committed five turnovers compared to the 15 committed by CSP. The Golden Bears did hold a 38-38 points in the paint advantage for the game.
Morgan Anderson led the way for MTU with a team-high 23 points while also adding a game-high seven assists. Brenna Heise added 19 points and six rebounds and Elizabeth Kelliher rounded out the double-digit scorers with 16 points and three blocks.
The Golden Bears return to action next week as they play their first home games of the season as they host Concordia-Portland on Friday, Nov. 25 for the first day of the Radisson Hotel MSP North Classic. Game time is set for 4 p.m.
