PITTSBURG, Kan. – The Golden Bears women's basketball team (1-1) dropped their first game of the season by a score of 73-53 at #12 Pittsburg State (2-0) team on the road Saturday afternoon.
Lindsay Dorr led the way for CSP off the bench with a career-high 17 points on 8-12 shooting from the floor. She also added three rebounds and two blocks. Also reaching double-figures for Concordia was
Mishayla Jones and
Anna Schmitt who finished with 12 and 10 points, respectively.
Kyrah Fredenburg added five points and pulled in a game-high 12 rebounds.
CSP got out to an early 4-1 lead to start the first quarter, but Pittsburg State would keep it close and for the last four minutes of the quarter the Gorillas would put together an 11-2 run to conclude the first quarter with a 17-8 lead.
In the second quarter, Concordia would pull within five points at the eight minute mark but another big run by Pittsburg State would quickly rebuild their lead to double-digits. The Gorillas would outscore the Golden Bears 21-8 after CSP pulled within five points. Pittsburg State would take a 40-22 lead heading into halftime.
Despite trailing by 18 at the half, sophomore
Lindsay Dorr did provide an offensive spark off the bench for CSP as she finished with eight first half points, six of which came in the second quarter. Haydn Herlocker would lead Pittsburg State with 15 first half points.
Points off turnovers was a key stat that stuck out in the first half as the Gorillas held a 17-4 advantage in that category. The Golden Bears failed to make a single three-point basket in the first half where Pittsburg State was successful on four three-pointers in the first half of play.
Coming out of the intermission break the Gorillas would continue to maintain a double-digit lead, but Dorr was still providing a boost to the Golden Bears offense as she scored eight of the team's 10 second half points.
Mishayla Jones would provide some scoring for CSP in the third quarter as she finished with five points for the quarter.
Pittsburg State would finish the third quarter leading 58-37. Concordia did a better job of holding Herlocker to only two third quarter points but a balanced scoring attack and a pair of three-pointers to open the second half would allow Pittsburg State to hold their commanding lead.
In the final frame of play the Gorillas would put together an 11-4 to start the quarter and eventually would build their biggest lead of the game of 29 points with 4:88 remaining in play.
Following the run by Pittsburg State, Concordia would respond with a 14-4 run of their own to close out the game. The Golden Bears would sink three three-pointers while going 3-4 from the free-throw line during their late run. Fredenburg, Jones and
Kayla Miller would each make one of the three three-pointers.
In the end Pittsburg State would protect their home court coming away with 73-53 win to remain perfect on the season. PSU would take advantage of multiple second-chance points opportunities as they finished with 19 second-chance points compared to CSP who only had five second-chance points.
