MINOT, N.D. - Concordia-St. Paul (1-2) picked up its first win of the season on Saturday afternoon 28-13 at Minot State (0-3) at Herb Parker Stadium for Minot's homecoming game.
The Golden Bears trailed 13-7 late in the contest before scoring three unanswered touchdowns including a 42-yard interception return with 1:01 to play by
DeCeon Schumann to put the game away as the Beavers attempted a game-tying late game drive.
Schumann's interception return was a punctuation mark on the team's overall defensive dominance of the host Beavers. Concordia held Minot to 209 yards of total offense, 83 on the ground at 2.3 per carry and 126 via the air.
Pressure certainly was a factor as Concordia sacked Minot State's quarterback four times and had 12 pass breakups of his 15 incomplete passes with two interceptions.
Jahphet Grant led the team with 11 tackles while
Jackson Dobbs had six tackles (five solo), three for loss and a sack.
Jordan Halverson added five tackles and an interception on the game's final play.
For the third straight game,
Alquawn Vickers had a big all-purpose day with 154 all-purpose yards, 55 coming on four receptions along with a 99-yard kickoff return touchdown.
The strong defense and special teams production was a boost to an offense that got off to a slow start before finishing strong. Sophomore quarterback
Ben Schramski produced 183 yards of total offense including eight rushes for 42 yards while completing 9-23 for 141. He completed a 30-yard go-ahead touchdown at the end of the third quarter to
Jason Oney for a 14-13 lead. Oney had two catches for 50 yards.
Once again, Schramski was diverse with his pass completions as he connected with five different targets on his nine completions.
The run game was led by
Darius Chapes with 67 yards on 13 carries (5.2) and a touchdown.
Vickers and Chapes took over for the offense in the fourth quarter with a 14-13 lead. On 3rd and 8 from their own 26 yard line, Schramski connected with Vickers for 17 yards before delivering a 22-yard completion to Vickers on the next play to move to Minot's 35 yard line.
Chapes burst off three straight runs of 4, 21 and 10 yards for a touchdown with 7:53 to play for an eight point lead after the
Jonas Schenderlein PAT.
The Golden Bears close out North-South division play next Saturday at home with a noon kickoff against Bemidji State.
