ST. PAUL, Minn. – The Concordia-St. Paul soccer team (1-3, 0-1 NSIC) closes out their season-opening six-game home stand this weekend with NSIC contests against Southwest Minnesota State (1-2-1, 1-0 NSIC) on Saturday and Sioux Falls (1-2, 0-1 NSIC) on Sunday. Both matches will begin a 1 p.m.
The Golden Bears return to NSIC action this weekend after grabbing their first win of the season last Sunday in dramatic fashion. CSP saw a 3-0 first half lead disappear as Viterbo forced overtime with three second half goals, including the game-tying goal in the 88
th minute. Concordia didn't let it get away as
Jessica Bianchi netted the game-winner in the first minute of the second overtime to seal the 4-3 victory.
Bianchi had a huge game for CSP as she collected her first multi-goal game, finishing with two goals and an assist in the win.
Chelsie Lindsay (goal and an assist) and
Alahna Anderson (two assists) also had multi-point games while freshman
Jordan Rowan-Stafford found the back of the net for her first Golden Bear goal.
Heading into the Saturday, Concordia holds a 7-10-1 record against the Mustangs in the all-time series overall. The Golden Bears have found more success recently in the series as they have won seven of the last nine meeting dating back to 2007. SMSU, however, won the last meeting in St. Paul two seasons ago and followed it up with a win in Marshall last year.
In last season's meeting, the two teams remained scoreless until Autumn Hayes broke through with a PK goal in the 61
st minute to give the Mustangs the decisive advantage.
Emma Gartner was solid in net as she made six saves and
Shannon Wynne was active with two shots in the game.
Sunday's match with Sioux Falls marks the sixth meeting between CSP and USF. The Golden Bears have dominated the series as they have won all five previous meetings, outscoring the Cougars 13-4 in those contests.
Last September, CSP claimed a 3-1 win on the road at Sioux Falls to pick up their first win of the year.
Taryn MacMillan shined as she scored her first of two two-goal games on the season while Concordia added another goal off a corner that deflected off a USF defender. Ciara Howerton chipped in a late goal for Sioux Falls but it was not enough as CSP's strong performance led to a 3-1 win.
Sunday's match at Sea Foam Stadium is Parent Appreciation Day as the soccer program will honor their parents at halftime of the game.
