ST. PAUL, Minn. – The Concordia University softball team (13-22, 7-5 NSIC) will look to improve on their current four game winning streak as they hit the road to face Winona State on Wednesday for an NSIC doubleheader. First pitch between the Golden Bears and the Warriors is scheduled for 2 p.m.
Concordia comes into the weekend riding high having won four in a row and six of their last seven as they have pushed their record above .500 in NSIC play. The offense really came alive over the weekend as they scored 43 runs and hit .425 as team with at least seven runs in each game in a four-game sweep. In the first three games of the weekend, Concordia erased deficits of at least four runs in each game to claim dramatic come-from-behind victories.
Haley Schanks was a big part of that success as she slashed .786/.813/1.571 in the four games over the weekend as she went 11-14 with two doubles and three homers while driving in nine runs. She highlighted that stretch by reaching base 12 straight plate appearances as she went 10-10 with a pair of walks and two doubles and two homers in that span. Schanks also made an impact in the circle as she threw a three-hit shutout in game two against Minnesota Crookston as she struck out six in the outing.
Navarae Honoroff was also a force at the plate over the weekend as she led the team with 11 RBI in the four games. Coming into the weekend, Honoroff had just a pair of RBI on the season but broke through in a big way as she collected seven hits in 15 at-bats. She drove in a career-high six RBI in game one against BSU as she went 2-4 with a grand slam to give Concordia the lead. She followed it up by driving in two more runs in game two and three more in game one on Saturday as she had at least one hit in each game.
The Golden Bears will look to change their fortunes in the all-time series against Winona State as they have gone 13-24 in the previous 37 meetings. In 14 meetings in Winona, Concordia has been even less successful as they have won just three times. CU has dropped nine of the last 11 in the series, including the last four overall. Their last win came back on April 26
th, 2012 in an 11-3 win in Rochester, Minn.
Winona State also enters the series red hot as they have won their first 10 NSIC games. The Warriors opened up their home slate last weekend with a sweep of Minnesota Duluth on Friday before sweeping St. Cloud State on Saturday. WSU hammered out 32 runs in the four games as they allowed just 10. Ashley Walker is a player to watch for the Warriors as she leads the team with a .385 average and ranks second with 30 RBI while also ranking second on the team with a 12-3 record in the circle with a 1.99 ERA in 16 appearances.
After the midweek doubleheader, Concordia will host MSU Moorhead and Northern State over the weekend.
